About The Position

The J's Youth Theatre JUNIORS is seeking an Assistant Director for its Fall production of Descendants the Musical. JUNIORS is an educational performance-based program for ages 8-15. Students must meet weekly to rehearse for their end of the semester performance. The emphasis is on building confidence, taking ownership of their place in the production, following direction, working as a team, and growing performance arts skills. The Assistant Director will work 100 hours each semester at a rate of $15.00 per hour including Sunday rehearsals as well as production meetings and additional remote hours for preparation. Attendance at all technical and dress rehearsals along with performances is required. Auditions are on Sunday, August 17, 2026. Rehearsals take place on Sunday afternoon, 2:00pm to 5:00pm (some holiday exceptions), with a few weekday evening dress rehearsals prior to production. Production week is December 6-13, 2026. Production meetings begin May 2026.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Prior experience working with children is required.
  • Strong classroom management skills is required.
  • Ability to work on a team and take the initiative is required.
  • Strong time management skills is required.
  • Ability to navigate various online platforms for production management and team communication is required.
  • A strong sense of inclusivity and the ability to provide a welcoming environment for all students in required.
  • The ability to adjust plans quickly is required.
  • Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is required.

Nice To Haves

  • College degree in a relate field is preferred or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the creative team on choosing the production for each semester and implementing the director's vision.
  • Work with the director and creative team to assign roles. Assignments should match to cast members' strengths and interests. All participants are cast.
  • Block the scenes the director assigns.
  • Assist actors with character development while sharing with them the vision for the show.
  • Help ensure that all materials are gathered and put away after rehearsals and performances.
  • Ensure any materials that must be returned are accounted for.
  • Be mindful of allocated budget for the production.
  • Keep Youth Theatre Coordinator informed of any concerns, how the show is proceeding, and about any communications which are to be sent out.
  • Know and understand all safety procedures of the J.
  • Attend all training and meetings as required.
  • Attend all rehearsals and performances.
  • Lead the students in theatre games and activities.
