The Assistant Director Upward Bound Math and Science is a full-time, 12 month, grant funded position that provides a leadership role focused on student success, persistence, graduation, post-secondary enrollment, and participant enrichment. Responsible for assisting with the management, administration, and implementation of the goals and objectives of NMC's Upward Bound Math and Science project. The position assists with the hiring and supervising of full time and summer staff; develops and implements curriculum aligned with Upward Bound Math and Science goals, ensures that student programming is carried out effectively and efficiently with an eye towards continuous quality improvement, and works closely with the target high school to ensure that student needs are being met. Works with Director of Upward Bound Programs in formulating and implementing policies and procedures, program planning, decision making, and collection and assessment of data. Work with key internal and external stakeholders to support program participants and will be knowledgeable of and stay current with grant related rules, regulations, and opportunities.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in related field with 1 year progressively responsible professional work experience required. Or Bachelor's Degree in related field with 2-3 years progressively responsible professional work experience required.
  • Administering comprehensive academic support programs or programs supporting underrepresented student populations including first-generation and individuals from lower socio-economic backgrounds considered in lieu of Master's Degree.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of historically underrepresented students.
  • Minimum of 1 year advising, counseling, teaching, and/or supervising individuals from first-generation college and low-income backgrounds required.
  • Requires the ability to provide transportation to other campus and/or work related locations within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Ability to gather relevant data for reporting, promoting program, and grant writing.
  • Knowledge of best practices in high school STEM education.
  • Able to work both independently and in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to develop relationships with a wide variety of community constituents.
  • Knowledge of educational, career, and developmental needs of adolescents.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Possesses strong collaborative and team building skills.
  • Ability to develop and implement programs for college access and student success.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills.
  • Ability to implement, document, and assess a plan of operation from a grant proposal.
  • Ability to gather relevant data for reporting, promoting program, and grant writing.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in program administration, supervising staff, and financial management preferred.
  • Experience making effective public presentations to a variety of audiences preferred.
  • Prior experience writing and managing grants and other budget support for program preferred.
  • Prior TRIO experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic, career, and personal counseling to Upward Bound Math & Science participants.
  • Assist with hiring, training, and supervising professional staff including instructors during the summer component.
  • Work with staff to promote and support professional development, resolve problems, and ensure program objectives are met.
  • Manage portions of the Upward Bound Math and Science participant support budget.
  • Assist with parent meetings, student advising/coaching, and other assistance as needed.
  • Work closely with current participants in both seminar and one-on-one advising formats on all pre-college tasks, including Individual Learning Plans.
  • Coordinate all pre-college programming including financial aid assistance, college application and scholarship preparation, and enrollment processes.
  • Assist in developing the curriculum and oversight of all Academic Year and Summer Component student programming.
  • Be the lead in executing innovative strategies and initiatives that promote the good academic standing, retention, graduation, and college enrollment/graduation of participants.
  • Be a visible and influential leader that reflects the values of the Upward Bound Math and Science program and College by developing, strengthening, and maintaining positive relationships with the target school(s), campus community, community entities, local businesses, and program participates and parents.
  • Lead initiatives that ensure success for underrepresented students and advocate for resources by demonstrating effective outcomes.
  • Carry out formative and substantive program assessment to assure effective operation of project.
  • Adhere to federal legislation and regulations; and EDGAR and OMB Circulars relevant to the administration of an Upward Bound Math and Science TRIO grant.
  • Oversee alumni tracking and management of student data system.
  • Develop and execute strategies for student recruiting at target high school to ensure eligibility requirements and program recruiting needs are met annually.
