About The Position

The Summer Math Instructor is responsible for providing high-quality, engaging, and college-preparatory mathematics instruction to high school students (grades 9–12) from first-generation and low-income backgrounds. The goal is to strengthen students' mathematical reasoning and prepare them for their upcoming fall semester math courses.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Math Education, or a related STEM field.
  • Experience: At least 1–2 years of experience teaching or tutoring high school-aged youth.
  • Mission Alignment: Demonstrated sensitivity to the needs of socioeconomically disadvantaged students and the ability to motivate underrepresented youth.
  • Tech Savvy: Proficiency with graphing calculators and digital learning platforms (e.g., Desmos, Google Classroom, or DeltaMath).

Nice To Haves

  • Valid State Teaching Certification in Secondary Mathematics.
  • Prior experience with TRIO programs (Upward Bound, Talent Search, etc.).
  • Master’s degree in Mathematics or Education.

Responsibilities

  • Curriculum Design: Develop a 6-week "Summer Bridge" curriculum for courses ranging from Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II to Pre-Calculus and Calculus.
  • Active Learning: Implement project-based learning and hands-on activities that connect math to real-world applications (e.g., financial literacy, engineering, or data science).
  • Assessment: Administer mandated pre-tests and post-tests to track academic growth and submit weekly progress reports for each student.
  • Test Prep: Integrate SAT/ACT, TSI math strategies and "number sense" techniques into daily lessons.
  • Mentorship: Collaborate with Tutors to identify students needing 1-on-1 intervention and provide academic guidance regarding STEM college majors.
