About The Position

The Assistant Director (AD) of the Office of Accessibility Resources and Services (OARS) is a professional position reporting to the Director of OARS and is housed within the Division of Student Affairs. This position is critical to UNCG for identifying barriers and providing appropriate access and support to students with disabilities. The primary goal of this position is to complement the academic mission of the university by providing resources to ensure compliance with disability legislation and equitable access to education. The AD consults with students who may have a wide spectrum of disabilities. In addition, the AD interacts with faculty, staff, families, and community resource agencies. They have extensive knowledge of reasonable, post-secondary accommodations and accessible technology. They assess psychological tests and other disability related documentation and individualized educational plans. The AD must have a full understanding of federal regulations including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), ADA Amendments Act of 2008, and be able to translate these regulations for a lay audience. The AD serves as a key professional staff member in a comprehensive program for students with disabilities and as such must have strong interpersonal and presentation skills, the ability to build and maintain collaborative partnerships, a strong work ethic, and the ability to effectively balance multiple and competing issues. Depending on the business needs of the office, this position may serve as OARS' primary liaison for Housing, accessible technology, accommodated testing, etc. Percentages for key responsibilities are also subject to variance based on office needs at the time.

Requirements

  • Graduate degree in a related field; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities associated with the delivery and/or management of student support functions.
  • Will accept a relevant undergraduate degree and relevant experience in substitution.

Nice To Haves

  • 3+ years in higher ed disability services.
  • Working knowledge of the ADAAA and Section 504 of the Rehab Act.
  • Familiarity with accessible technology for disabled students.
  • Ability to work independently and take appropriate initiative.
