About The Position

Under the direction and supervision of the Director of Well-Being Programs and Outreach, the Assistant Director of Peer Programs (AD) will oversee and lead major peer-focused programs on campus and serve as the secondary administrator under the Director. The AD will be successful in their role by working collaboratively with key on-campus and off-campus partners, building positive relationships with students and colleagues across campus, and by keeping the development & well-being of our students at their forefront.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
  • 3 - 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, social justice, and cultural competence and the ability to work in a multicultural environment.
  • Have background and experience in health education and promotion, and health education strategies.
  • Excellent public speaking skills and demonstrated skills in a variety of educational methods including presentations, workshops, trainings, individual behavior change sessions, and small group discussion/facilitation.
  • Ability to quickly form positive working relationships across function areas and maintain communication with those areas.
  • Quantitative and qualitative research skills (e.g., research design, survey development, environmental assessment, focus group design and facilitation, data analysis and interpretation, etc.).
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, manage time efficiently, and prioritize tasks.
  • Flexibility to work in structured and unstructured learning environments and to interact as a team member with professional and administrative staff member.
  • Sensitivity to the confidential nature of health-related information.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree.
  • 4 - 6 years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of and experience with motivational interviewing.
  • Have experience with direct service and student support, especially in the areas of victim advocacy.
  • Knowledge of substance use interventions is a plus.
  • Knowledge of recovery programs and local organizations to help support on-campus programs.
  • Familiarity with social media, marketing, and health communications strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Administration of Peer Programs Recruitment and training of undergraduate and graduate Peer Health Educators, curriculum building and implementation, program expansion and management. Provides assistance with outreach program initiatives, coordinates workshops and presentations, and provide consultations to the American University community.
  • Outreach Programming Provides training and outreach programs/services to student groups, staff, faculty, and parents, such as workshops or presentations on topics related to mental health, human development, and Center for Well-Being services. Serves as staff advisor to relevant AU student groups (e.g., Active Minds).
  • Direct Support of Students Provides direct student support through consultations, outreach, programs, and presentations. Work with students to facilitate wellness activities and events through supervision, mentorship, and co-facilitations.
  • Community Collaborations and Data Management Works cooperatively with, and provides consultation to, campus colleagues concerning health and wellness trends among the college student population. Administers and analyzes data sources, including the National College Health Assessment survey. Establishes and maintains relationships with internal and external health services and agencies. Serves on various committees and working groups, as appropriate.
  • Other Duties as Assigned Engage in professional activities such as continuing professional development, research and grant writing, conference presentations, writing and publishing, and participation in professional organizations.
