About The Position

The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) is the primary nurse backup to the Director of Nursing in our Smith Care Center (60-bed skilled nursing facility) and takes clinical responsibility for the SCC in the absence of the DON. The ADON trains and assesses nursing skills of all nursing personnel associated with the Smith Care Center. The ADON is responsible for assuring skin integrity for SCC residents, Quality Assurance, helping maintain a safe working and living environment, and assessing potential SCC residents, as needed.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree (A.A.) in nursing from a two-year college or hospital school; or a Bachelor’s degree (B.S.N.) in nursing from a four-year college or university.
  • Minimum four years’ experience working in a skilled nursing facility.
  • Must have good organizational skills.
  • Must be a detail-oriented person and able to perform duties with great accuracy on a daily basis.
  • Must have excellent personal skills, demonstrating the ability to conduct oneself in a non-controversial style; a style that inspires the respect of others and promotes a sense of trust in the individual’s competence.
  • Must have good communication skills; speaking, writing, and listening.
  • Must be fluent in English.
  • Must have excellent computer skills.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office programs with emphasis on Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Word, with the ability to learn and use proprietary software as required.
  • Must have valid license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Florida.
  • Must have a valid Florida driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in staff education preferred.
  • Experience with infection control, wound care, and quality assurance preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, schedule, and assure implementation of the in-service training for Health Services personnel. Develops the in-service curriculum and calendar, ensuring that licensed and non-licensed personnel receive appropriate training in accordance with state and federal licensing requirements. Comply with Florida state statutes regarding required continuing education credits.
  • Provide a detailed orientation for all new hires in Heath Services. Ensure that all regulatory education is provided and documented.
  • Ensure that personnel from other departments who serve in the Smith Care Center participate in relevant general in-service programs such as Fire Safety, Patient Rights, General Safety, etc.
  • Ensure that other department directors are providing in-service training for their team members who serve the Smith Care Center, as mandated by Chapter 59A4 of the Florida Administrative Code. This includes housekeepers, laundry aides, all team members involved in food preparation and service to the Smith Care Center (tray set-up) and Maintenance team members currently assigned.
  • Provide the appropriate skills assessments for Clinical Staff. This includes daily spot assessments and reinforcing proper technique/protocols, as well as periodic in-services and Skills Fair.
  • Responsible for monitoring skin condition for all residents of SCC. Conduct rounds at least weekly, track and trend wounds to determine where further education may be needed. Work closely with physicians and nurses to ensure best protocols are maintained. Report results at weekly Risk Meeting, as well as monthly Q/A.
  • Work closely with Director of Health Services and Q/A committee to determine what process improvement projects (PIPs) should be conducted and conduct PIPs, as directed. Report results at weekly Risk Meeting, as well as monthly Q/A.
  • Conduct on-site (e.g., hospital/home) assessment of potential residents, as needed.
  • Attend Q/A, Stand Up and Care Plan meetings in SCC, as needed.
  • Work safely; complying at all times with PH’s safety standards.
  • Direct and supervise, on assigned unit, the daily functions of the nursing staff in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern the Skilled Nursing Facility.
  • Ensure that all nursing personnel assigned to assigned care area comply with the written policies and procedures established by this facility.
  • Participate with updating and reviewing care plans that identify goals, problems, approaches, and revisions based on nursing needs.
  • Administer professional nursing services when needed commensurate with the scope of practice.
  • Meet with assigned nursing staff to discuss planning the shift’s services, programs, and activities and monitor duties are completed as directed.
  • Collaborate with other members of the interdisciplinary team to ensure that the resident’s total regimen of care is maintained.
  • Manage quality and accuracy of the EHR for all residents and staff under your oversight.
  • Manage and improve unit based performance metrics that are reported by the facility ie. (falls, FAPU, QMs, Re-hospitalizations, etc.).
  • Oversee the quality of resident admissions, transfers and discharges.
  • Participate in the orientation of new residents/family members to the unit.
  • Complete daily clinical and environmental rounds to evaluate resident care and report significant events.
  • Address resident/family issues in a timely manner. Report significant issues to the Director of Nursing.
  • Communicate with health care practitioner to review treatment plans, complete orders, progress notes, etc., in accordance with established policies.
  • Oversee the completion of accident/incident reports involving residents. Report to IDT.
  • Complete Recapitulations each month for physician signature. Report all discrepancies to DON.
  • Ensure that an adequate supply of floor stock medications, supplies, and equipment are available to meet resident care needs.
  • Conduct team member performance evaluations.
  • Make recommendations to the DON concerning team member discipline, dismissal and/or transfers.
  • Discharge properly other responsibilities and duties that may be directed by the Director of Nursing or Sr. Vice President of Health Services.
