About The Position

Alltown Bus Service Beacon Mobility is seeking an experienced Assistant Director of Maintenance to support fleet maintenance operations throughout the Chicagoland region. This role oversees the maintenance and safety of school buses, paratransit vehicles, and light‑duty vehicles. The position supports the Director of Fleet Maintenance and helps internal maintenance staff, ensure regulatory compliance, and drive operational efficiency across assigned facilities. Salary range: $100,000–$140,000 depending on experience. Set the standard for excellence in the maintenance department. Manages the full fleet of school buses, light duty vehicles and support equipment within the assigned area, in alignment with Beacon objectives. Manage daily fleet maintenance operations, including repairs, inspections, and preventive maintenance programs. Ensure implementation of preventive maintenance standards to guarantee vehicle safety and operating efficiency. Oversee compliance with DOT, state, and local inspection requirements, including emissions standards. Analyze fleet performance data and develop strategies to improve uptime and reduce operational costs. Prioritize areas workload based on customer requirements, parts availability, and manpower Supervise and support Fleet Managers, Supervisors, Technicians, and Parts personnel across multiple maintenance sites. Participate in hiring, training, scheduling, performance management, and coaching of maintenance staff. Ensure team compliance with company policies, safety standards, and maintenance best practices. Assist in developing and managing maintenance budgets, cost‑control strategies, and operational reporting. Oversee control of maintenance costs related to labor, inventory, purchasing, and outsourced repairs. Supervise inventory accuracy for parts, fluids, and equipment. Coordinate with vendors and suppliers regarding parts procurement and service contracts. Communicate fleet status, repair timelines, and operational impacts to internal operations teams. Collaborate with leadership to execute maintenance strategies aligned with Beacon Mobility’s regional goals. Manages operations across multiple assigned sites and must be willing to travel up to 40% of the time to support location needs.

Requirements

  • Vocational training in automotive technology or equivalent, and at least (10) years of experience related to heavy or light vehicle maintenance.
  • Minimum of 5 yrs. experience in managing a large work group with demonstrated performance as well as managing remote locations
  • Specific training and/or extensive experience in maintenance or a related field, preferably in a supervisory role position, is required.
  • Prior experience in supervising, directing, and/or training employees is required.
  • Prior experience with Fleet Management Information systems (FMIS)
  • Advanced PC Skills - MS Office with an emphasis on Excel. Ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technology (Comdata, NetSuite, etc)
  • Manages operations across multiple assigned sites and must be willing to travel up to 40% of the time to support location needs.

  • ASE Master Medium or Heavy Truck and Master Automobile certifications preferred
