About The Position

The Assistant Director of Facilities, Planning and Construction leads the planning, execution, and oversight of campus facilities projects, including new construction, renovations, maintenance, and grounds improvements. As the College’s primary project manager, this role directs all phases of project delivery—from concept development and permitting through design, bidding, construction, and closeout—ensuring alignment with institutional goals, fiscal responsibility, and regulatory compliance. The Assistant Director collaborates with architects, engineers, contractors, consultants, and campus stakeholders to deliver safe, sustainable, and high-performing projects. The role works closely with the Director of Facilities providing strategic leadership in facilities management best practices, including budgeting, procurement, energy efficiency, and adherence to building codes and standards.

Requirements

  • 2 years of progressively responsible experience with construction project management, building design, facilities planning or owner’s representation relevant to the duties described in this position description, A degree in related field (Architecture, Engineering or Construction Management) may substitute for experience as follows: Associate’s degree = 6 months; Bachelor’s degree = 12 months; Master’s degree = 18 months
  • 2 Years’ experience supervising staff or leading multiple trades in a facilities, construction, or public sector environment relevant to the duties described in this position description.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage multiple projects simultaneously including responsibility for schedules, budgets, and stakeholder coordination.
  • Ability to interpret and apply construction documents including plans, specifications, and blueprints to make field decisions and resolve discrepancies.
  • Fiscal Management and technology skills sufficient to develop cost estimates, track project budgets, and produce documentation required for public-sector procurement.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills sufficient to draft technical correspondence, coordinate with consultants and resolve project issues with stakeholders.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, Engineering, or Construction Management or an equivalent combination of education and experience, and 5 years of experience with construction project management, owner’s representation, or building design.
  • Experience working in a public sector, higher education facilities environment of comparable scale, complexity, and regulatory requirements.
  • Working knowledge of the Minnesota State Board Policies, Design Standards, and project procurement procedures.
  • Proficiency or demonstrated familiarity in AutoCAD, CMMS systems, or other facilities management software sufficient to support project documentation, planning, and coordination.
  • Experience or meaningful exposure to sustainability initiatives, energy efficiency, and integrating environmentally responsible practices into construction and operations.

Responsibilities

  • Exercise supervisory authority so that applicable labor agreements and plans are equitably administered and employees under the supervisor’s jurisdiction will effectively perform assigned job duties to achieve the annual objective of the section.
  • Serve as the College’s primary project manager for new construction, renovations, and design projects from inception through completion, including permitting, planning, specifications, bidding, construction, and closeout.
  • Collaborate and lead architects, engineers, contractors, consultants, and campus stakeholders to manage all phases of project execution, ensure compliance with applicable standards and regulations, maintain accurate documentation, and support safe, efficient, and strategically aligned facilities improvements.
  • Support the planning and development of the physical plant operations by establishing multiyear design and construction projects, capital renewal, and replacement to meet the needs of the college academic and administrative operations.
  • Support budget development, procurement, and recordkeeping functions by preparing estimates, managing contracts, and purchasing activities, maintaining departmental documentation, and overseeing inventory and vendor coordination in alignment with organizational policies, and planning/construction activities.
