Overview 5 West is an 18-bed, medical-surgical unit at Children’s Mercy with enhanced behavioral services. The unit was created to serve the unique needs of children who meet medical necessity criteria for admission and also have developmental, behavioral or psychiatric considerations. The unit prioritizes safety for these co-occurring needs while creating experiences that promote stabilization. 5 West team members include highly trained nurses and medical teams with dedicated support from Behavioral Health Technicians (BHTs), psychiatrists, psychologists, Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs), family therapists, child life specialists, pharmacists, music and art therapists, hospital-based schoolteachers and our facility dog Patsy. The Assistant Nursing Department Director, in collaboration with and under the direction of the Nursing Director, is accountable for ongoing leadership and operations of a clinical department and for nursing care safety and quality. The Assistant Department Director uses sound human resource and budget principles to guide the daily provision of nursing services to patients and families. The Assistant Department Director supports comprehensive patient and family services through effective participation with the inter-professional team.
