About The Position

The Assistant Director for Student Government Leadership serves as the primary advisor to the Graduate Professional Student Congress (GPSC) and the Office of Financial Affairs (OFA), a branch of the Associated Student Government (ASG) that awards student activity fee funding to Registered Student Organizations. The Assistant Director reports to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Administration for Student Affairs and proactively and strategically advises graduate student leaders in GPSC to advocate for graduate students. Responsibilities include: aid in the development of graduate student leaders of GPSC; effective advising of the ASG Treasurer in their role overseeing OFA; effective management of GPSC elections; stewardship and oversight of GPSC and OFA budgets; oversee revision of documents including GPSC code/constitution and OFA Standing Rules; serves as a direct advisor for the GPSC Executive Team, and as a resource to organizational officers and members. Regular communication and collaboration with the Graduate School will be important. This position will also collaborate with other student government staff in developing comprehensive, co-curricular programs for student government, including developing, implementing, and assessing leadership programs that contribute to student learning. In advising OFA, this position will attend weekly OFA board meetings to help facilitate the interpretation of the standing rules for funding decisions, supervise a graduate assistant and serve as liaison between OFA and the Fiscal Support Specialist, encourage an impartial review of budgets, and clarify procurement rules or processes. The Assistant Director also provides general organizational support. At times, work hours will fall outside the traditional 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education
  • Progressive experience in student government advisement or similar student leadership program
  • Knowledge of Student Development Theory
  • Time management and organizational skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic budgeting skills
  • Ability to plan effective events
  • Ability to develop student leaders within specific competencies utilized in their cocurricular experiences
  • Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education
  • Experience in facilitating and developing leadership programs for students and student groups that provided cultural, educational, and/or social activities
  • Experience in large event coordination, goal setting, and strategic planning
  • At least three years of student government advisement experience
