About The Position

The Smithsonian Institution is the world's largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is in the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). The National Museum of African American History and Culture is a national museum for the study and exhibition of African American history and culture. The Assistant Director for Finance and Budget is primarily responsible for the integration of financial management throughout the Museum providing services in financial strategic planning, management analysis, administrative systems and tools, budget formulation, justification and defense, budget execution and procurement.

Requirements

  • Basic Qualifications: Experience that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.
  • Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience formulating, justifying, executing, and managing federal and trust (non-appropriated) fund budgets; developing and negotiating contracts; conducting internal audits on financial procedures; leading, directing and/or coordinating work of staff; and preparing and presenting financial summaries.

Responsibilities

  • develop, present, and coordinate federal and trust program budgets for NMAAHC.
  • provide leadership in long range planning, development and execution of multi-year budgets for major programs.
  • serve as advisor to the Associate Director on long- and short-range program planning and allocation of Museum resources.
  • serve as principal liaison to the office of Planning, Management and Budget in budget formulation and execution.
  • oversee the preparation of projections of NMAAHC obligations, costs and outlay.
  • establish and oversee the procurement division.
  • serve as advisor to Director, Deputy Director and Associate Director on all matters related with audits of Museum financial/budgetary functions.
  • supervise, lead, direct and coordinate the work of a staff specifically assigned to financial programs and serve as subject matter expert.
  • provide advice and counsel to museum staff at all levels in several administrative areas such as budget, procurement, accounting and audit.
