About The Position

At the intersection of policy and people, SUNY Oneonta is seeking a temporary Assistant Director for Employee Services to lead initiatives that support a fair, consistent, and engaged workplace. In this role, you'll work closely with the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) to provide high-level guidance on employee relations, interpret policies and collective bargaining agreements, and serve as an advisor to supervisors and campus leadership. You will also be responsible for leading workplace investigations, recommending and initiating disciplinary processes when appropriate, and maintaining accurate documentation to ensure SUNY's policies are applied consistently across the university. The Employee Services Department provides services and guidance related to recruitment and employment, employee relations, performance management, benefits and leaves, and payroll. The department serves over 1,100 employees in a variety of roles across campus and works to support an inclusive environment that supports the university's mission and values. Reporting to the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), the Assistant Director for Employee Services will provide guidance on employee relations matters, assist with conflict resolution, interpret policies and collective bargaining agreements, and ensure the consistent and equitable application of workplace policies and procedures. This includes conducting workplace investigations and recommending and initiating the disciplinary process in accordance with established procedures when applicable.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Minimum of 6 years' progressive Human Resources experience, with at least 4 years' HR experience at the mid/high management level
  • Strong knowledge of HR best practices, employment law, and compliance standards
  • Demonstrated experience conducting workplace investigations
  • Ability to exercise high level of discretion and maintain strict adherence to confidentiality
  • Highly effective written and oral communication skills
  • Experience working with collective bargaining agreements
  • Evidence of outstanding cultural competency and working successfully with employees from many backgrounds in the workplace
  • Deep experience with employee relations and sensitive workplace matters
  • Extensive knowledge of employment laws and regulations

Nice To Haves

  • Current PHR/SPHR S/CP or similar HR certification
  • Master's degree in human resources, business administration, social sciences, or other related discipline
  • Experience with SUNY procedures and processes specifically related to employee relations
  • Human Resources experience in a unionized environment
  • Experience in the public sector and/or higher education

Responsibilities

  • Conducting investigations in accordance with established policies and procedures and applicable collective bargaining agreements
  • Providing consultation and guidance to supervisors and employees on a wide range of employee relations matters such as performance management, workplace concerns, policy interpretation and corrective action
  • Resolving workplace conflicts by facilitating discussions, recommending solutions, and ensuring issues are handled with fairness and confidentiality
  • Maintaining accurate documentation and records related to employee relations cases and actions
