Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in guidance and counseling and course work in psychology, testing and measurement, sociology, or education.

  • Preferred eligible for a valid teacher's certificate, with endorsement in counseling and guidance or LPC.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Be regular and punctual in attendance.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all school-related business.
  • Develop and implement an effective school guidance and counseling program.
  • Coordinate the registration of new students and provide them with an orientation to school procedures and the school's various opportunities for learning.
  • Develop a method for recording student grades, attendance information, and other pertinent
  • educational data, as well as maintain and protect security of student records.
  • Prepare informative reports and materials for the director, fellow teachers/counselors, students, and parents concerning the results of the school's testing program.
  • Assist teachers in identifying and interpreting problems that interfere with a student's ability
  • to learn.
  • Provide individual and group counseling opportunities that may lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity.
  • Provide family counseling opportunities.
  • Establish a close working relationship with the Juvenile Probation Officers.
  • Establish effective working relationships with employers, agencies, and other institutions
  • that may be of use to teachers, parents, and students.
  • Assume responsibility for individual professional development and for attending appropriate professional meetings.
  • Create and maintain the school’s threat assessment, bullying procedure, and illegal substance procedure.
  • Execute quarterly safety drill activities.
  • Review and update school safety plan.
  • Revise and update Code of Conduct.
  • Assist with DYS compliance and standards files.
  • Serve as court liaison.
  • Serve as Falcons Scholars in Action liaison.
  • Assume responsibility for transportation.
  • Attend monthly school counselor meetings (Shelby County and Alabaster City).
  • Oversee Backpack Buddies.
  • Serve as person in charge when the Executive Director is not on-campus.
  • Perform such other duties and assume such other responsibilities as the executive director may from time-to-time assign.
