About The Position

The Assistant Dean of Academic Excellence will develop and execute a concrete plan for academic support, aimed at bar passage, that serves students beginning with zero-L and 1L programming through bar licensure. The Assistant Dean will bring visionary leadership for shaping the direction of the office and the nuanced and complex ways it serves students, which could include taking creative and novel approaches to fostering academic excellence, proposing structural changes, and expanding the reach and efficacy of the program. The Assistant Dean will lead OAE internally, motivating, organizing, and coordinating a team focused on academic advising, academic success, and bar performance. At the same time, the Assistant Dean will lead OAE initiatives externally, coordinating the work of the office with senior academic leadership and faculty committees, the Office of Student Affairs, the Legal Rhetoric Program, the Office of Academic Affairs, the Pence Law Library, the Office of Inclusive Excellence and Leadership Development, and the Office of Career and Professional Development. With this holistic perspective, interacting across every department of the law school, the Assistant Dean will find ways in which curricular and pedagogical decisions optimally intersect with academic support. This position reports directly to the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor or equivalent.
  • 8 - 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Minimum of six years of legal experience.
  • Experience either in academic skills at a law school or similar academic setting or in professional bar review services.
  • Excellent writing, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations and recommend and implement appropriate actions.
  • Experience in teaching, advising, and mentoring students.
  • Highest ethical and professional standards and proven ability to exercise sound judgment.
  • Superb administrative skills and multi-tasking abilities.
  • Positive attitude and enterprising approach.
  • Ability to work both individually and in a team.
  • Authorized to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

  • Develop an overarching strategy to help students improve their academic skills and achieve academic excellence both in law school and on the bar exam.
  • Provide vision, strategic direction, and accountability for enhancing the experience of first-year students to support their academic transition and success in law school.
  • Oversee, manage, motivate, and evaluate the OAE team.
  • Integrate the work of OAE with the faculty, faculty committees, and all core AU WCL offices.
  • Keep abreast of bar licensure trends, developments in NextGen Bar administration, and accreditation policies.
  • Analyze outcomes and data on a regular basis to identify strengths and opportunities for growth in terms of bar passage and curricular advancement.
  • Additional duties as necessary.
