About The Position

The Assistant Dean for Whole Health Education is responsible for the design and delivery of an innovative four-year medical school curriculum that engages medical students in active and novel learning and helps AWSOM create meaningful Whole Health clinical exemplars within the community and ecosystem. This position will guide the integration of whole health principles and practices throughout the curriculum and will design and implement whole health-specific learning activities within the Integrated Principles of Medicine (IPM) courses. The Assistant Dean for Whole Health Education develops and manages all four-year components of this thread, including learning objectives, active learning activities, and student assessments. This individual collaborates closely with Course Directors and other Thread Leaders and administrators as part of an interdisciplinary team. This position is open at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor level within the non-tenure track, depending on experience and qualifications.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree (MD) with specific training/experience in whole health or a closely related field, required.
  • Five or more years of experience with Whole Health curriculum development in healthcare and/or higher education, required.
  • Evidence of teaching excellence in postgraduate education, required.
  • Experience in student evaluation in higher education, required.
  • Demonstrated strong judgment, intellectual agility, and flexibility regarding overall priorities and day-to-day tasks, required
  • Demonstrated proactive approach and strong problem-solving skills required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a start-up environment, preferred.
  • A record of nationally recognized achievement in Whole Health, preferred.
  • Five or more years of experience in an LCME accredited undergraduate medical education, preferred.
  • Familiarity with an array of educational technologies and active learning methodologies, preferred.
  • Strong editing and writing skills, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop all content tied to the Embracing Whole Health (EWH) curriculum.
  • Work closely with colleagues throughout the School of Medicine to ensure whole health is woven seamlessly throughout the four years.
  • Design and deliver content using active learning methodologies (e.g., flipped classroom).
  • Collaborate with the Senior Director of Assessment and Evaluation in the development and interpretation of content assessment and evaluation.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Curriculum Management to facilitate curriculum mapping related to the thread.
  • Together with the Faculty Affairs Office, facilitate faculty development related to Whole Health within our clinical environments.
  • Assist the Office of Clinical Affairs to design the AWSOM clinical space and delivery model to embrace Whole Health principles.
  • Actively participate in service-related activities, including membership on committees and work groups within AWSOM and the community.
  • Participate in professional development programs to enhance teaching, educational and other skills needed to execute their responsibilities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Lead, coach, and develop direct reports, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and high performance.
  • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings and performance evaluations, providing feedback and professional development opportunities.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and training of direct reports to ensure alignment with organizational standards and practices.
  • Monitor and manage team performance, addressing attendance, conduct, or productivity issues promptly and professionally.
  • Model professionalism and service excellence, serving as a role model for your team in maintaining quality and operational standards.
  • Encourage employee engagement and morale through recognition and open communication practices.
