About The Position

The Assistant Dairy Manager is a full-time, year-round position for a two-year term. This role is designed to provide a Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship graduate (journeyworker), or someone with similar training, with the knowledge and experience necessary for management positions on other dairy farms or to start their own grass-based cattle enterprise. This position focuses on certain aspects of dairy operations management, deepening technical skills, and continuing to develop interpersonal skills and financial literacy. The Assistant Dairy Manager will work closely with the Dairy Manager to foster a supportive learning environment for apprentices and a culture of professionalism in the dairy program. By the completion of the two-year term, the Assistant Dairy Manager will be well-prepared to manage cattle and a work crew of their own or to add significant value to an existing dairy at a managerial level.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of experience in organic and/or pasture-based livestock operations; completion of the Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship program (Journey status) is a plus.
  • Proficiency in operating farm machinery and equipment (e.g., tractors, haying equipment, skid steer).
  • Strong teamwork skills and the ability to develop positive working relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; enthusiastic, engaging, and comfortable working with the public.
  • Strong organizational abilities, including time management, planning, and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Comfortable working independently with high levels of autonomy, and adaptable to the needs of a dynamic nonprofit farm.
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs, work in a range of weather conditions, and work extended daily/weekly hours during the high season

Responsibilities

  • Support the Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship program by fostering a strong team dynamic, a supportive learning environment, and a culture of professionalism.
  • Provide focused management over certain livestock enterprises or management areas. This may be determined by the interests of the Assistant Dairy Manager, the needs of the farm, and the time of year.
  • Provide assistance with basic dairy operations, including but not limited to: Regular milking and chore shifts
  • Moving temporary fencing for rotational grazing
  • Administering basic veterinary care
  • Trailering livestock
  • Maintaining accurate records and documentation in PastureMap, PCDART, and hardcopy systems
  • Operate farm equipment safely and effectively, including tractors, and skid steers.
  • Collaborate with staff across Wolfe's Neck Center to support cross-departmental projects and organizational goals.
  • Work a variable schedule that includes weekends, occasional long days, and participation in emergency situations. Scheduling expectations are as follows:
  • Variable weekly hours (35-50) depending on seasonal workload
  • Five scheduled shifts per week (five days working, two consecutive days off every week)
  • One weekend day off per week (Saturday or Sunday)
  • Split coverage/time off for holidays with the Dairy Manager
  • Serve as Residential Advisor to Banter House
  • Lead and facilitate monthly meetings for residents
  • Encourage and enforce house policies and community agreement
  • Respond to complaints, conflicts, requests, and support any emergencies
