About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Associate Director, the Assistant Coordinator is a dual-role, entry-level professional position within the Residential Education Office and Campus Life subdivision in the Division of Student Affairs and Campus Diversity. This training position provides hands-on experience in residential life, student engagement, and co-curricular programming. The incumbent supports residence hall operations, including front desk management, student staff coordination, community safety, and housing processes such as opening and closing. The Assistant Coordinator also supports student development initiatives through programming, advising, and outreach efforts that promote leadership, inclusion, and academic success, while gaining practical experience in student affairs. This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position with an anticipated end date of June 30, 2027, with the possibility of reappointment. This appointment is for an 11/12 pay-plan position. The incumbent works 11 months per year and is paid over 12 months, with June 2027 as the anticipated off month. This position is designated as non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs. The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego. The Campus Life subdivision is committed to working closely with the Postsecondary Educational Leadership with an emphasis on Student Affairs master’s program to cultivate professional, experiential learning opportunities for graduate students. This training position is intended to provide a robust, hybrid experience within Campus Life at SDSU, ultimately preparing student affairs professionals while enhancing student services. The Residential Education Office (REO) is designated as the University department responsible for planning and administering Residential Education programs and services including those in traditional residence halls and apartment complexes. The Residential Education Office serves to enhance student life and success through a comprehensive living-learning experience that provides academic and personal support, contact with faculty, educational programs, community activities, student leadership development and multicultural learning opportunities. The Residential Education Office strives to provide safe and supportive on-campus living- learning communities where diverse students are challenged to develop holistically, as scholars, citizens and leaders. Residential Education staff members are dedicated to providing curricular and co-curricular experiences to develop and enhance residents’ academic success, awareness and appreciation of diversity, and civic responsibility.

Requirements

  • Must be enrolled full-time in a graduate program during employment
  • Required to live in on-campus housing as a condition of the role
  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a job-related field.
  • Specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown below may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
  • Enrollment in the Postsecondary Educational Leadership (Student Affairs) graduate program during the academic year of appointment.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations, with an understanding of individual and group behavior and the ability to advise students both individually and in group settings.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and present data, and use findings to inform decisions, programs, and services.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and community partners through strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and follow through on actions, considering impacts across programs and service areas.
  • Basic experience in program development and event planning, including student organizations, leadership programs, and student support services.
  • Proficiency in relevant technology and systems, including Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, student engagement platforms (e.g., Modern Campus), housing/CRM systems (e.g., StarRez, Navigate), and campus-specific tools.
