About The Position

Under the supervision and direction of the Controller, the Assistant Controller is responsible for performing routine accounting functions that directly impact the organization's financial performance. Certain of these tasks are the sole responsibility of the Assistant Controller, while others provide assistance to the Controller in the accomplishment of overall departmental and hospital goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting / Finance.
  • Minimum of two years of healthcare accounting experience.

Nice To Haves

  • CPA preferred.
  • Experience in mainframe and PC-based reporting systems preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares numerous journal entries that form the basis of the monthly financial closing process.
  • Monitors status and accuracy of monthly statistical reporting processes. Identifies discrepancies and directs Accountants in the resolution thereof.
  • Responsible for the generation of routine, monthly financial reports, as well as those requested on an ad hoc basis. Reports are extracted from a multitude of source systems.
  • Performs monthly reconciliations of general ledger accounts to ensure the integrity of financial statement reporting.
  • Understands the flow of transactions and reporting mechanisms that define the overall Accounts Payable function. Tracks staff productivity and acts as informal leader to this group.
  • Understands the flow of transactions and reporting mechanisms that comprise the overall Payroll function. Serves as backup and support to the Payroll Coordinator in the generation of manual checks and select Payroll processing functions.
  • Assists Controller and Accounting staff with formulation of departmental Operating and Capital Budgets. Provides guidance and support to department managers in preparation of their budgets.
  • Prepares workpapers to assist Reimbursement staff in filing annual Medicare/ Medicaid Cost Reports.
  • Prepares workpapers to facilitate Internal Audit staff in their review of internal control procedures and the integrity of the financial statements. Researches and resolves a variety of questions posed by the Auditors.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Controller or Chief Financial Officer.
  • Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of HCA Accounting principles and practices. Understands daily accounting transactions and anticipates their impact on the financial statements.
  • Utilizes available computer systems and software applications effectively and efficiently. On an as-needed basis, instructs other Accounting staff members in the use of these systems, including, but not limited to, HOST, Kronos, PLUS+, SMART, Clear Access, Decision Support and Remark.
  • Possesses effective oral and written communication skills necessary to fulfill position duties and responsibilities.
  • Maintains awareness of current trends, changes, regulations and legislation in the Accounting and Healthcare industries.
  • Prioritizes multiple work assignments appropriately and effectively.
  • Maintains all operational policies and procedures within the Accounting department in order to ensure compliance with hospital and corporate standards.
  • Ensures that problems or concerns regarding the Accounting department, as well as financial issues within other hospital departments, are immediately communicated to the Controller.
  • Maintains a professional appearance, demeanor and work ethic.
  • Consistently provides accurate and timely service to key stakeholders, including coworkers, management, physicians, patients and guests.
