About The Position

Adventures on the Gorge is a premier outdoor adventure destination located on the rim of the New River Gorge in West Virginia, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Offering world-class whitewater rafting, ziplining, rock climbing, and more, the resort combines thrilling experiences with cozy accommodations, exceptional dining, and breathtaking views. With a mission to create unforgettable memories, Adventures on the Gorge is the perfect place for adventurers and nature lovers alike. The Assistant Controller is responsible for supporting the financial operations of Adventures on the Gorge and Summersville Lake State Park. This position manages core accounting functions, ensures adherence to GAAP, and assists in financial planning activities. The role requires technical accounting knowledge, leadership abilities, and a collaborative approach to promote operational efficiency across departments. The Assistant Controller supports the Finance department’s objectives and assists operating departments with forecasting, budgeting, labor and inventory controls, analysis, auditing, and operational responsibilities for the assigned units. This position is based at Adventures on the Gorge.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years’ work experience as a key contributor to day-to-day accounting activities and the financial close process.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Customer focused mindset with attention to detail.
  • Excellent planning, organizational, and communication skills.
  • 5 days per week in an office setting

Responsibilities

  • Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes.
  • Process and verify vendor invoices for accuracy, proper authorization, and compliance with company policies.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to resolve invoice or purchase order issues.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, audit requirements, and regulatory standards.
  • Provide customer‑service‑oriented support to internal departments, serving as a responsive, knowledgeable resource for AP‑related questions and helping employees navigate accounting processes smoothly.
  • Contribute to day-to-day accounting functions, prepare journal entries, prepare GL account reconciliations, and prepare financial statements.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal controls.
  • Support external audits and tax filings.
  • Monitor cash flow, vendor payments, and contract compliance.
  • Recommend and implement automation and efficiency initiatives.
  • Maintain logs and procedures to support internal audit readiness.
  • Document scalable accounting policies and workflows.
  • Act as a liaison between finance and operational departments.
  • Contribute to financial planning & analysis projects as needed.
