Your Opportunity The Assistant Construction Manager position is a junior level position for a highly organized and motivated individual who has the initiative to grow their career on a variety of heavy civil design and construction projects. The successful candidate will work on challenging and diverse tasks in a consulting and construction management role that will require application of technical skills, project delivery, and leadership. These projects could include design and construction of water and sewer pipelines, sitework for municipal water and sewer facilities, sewer lines, infrastructure systems including treatment plants, pump stations, waste containment facilities, dams and flood control structures, and related infrastructure. You will perform a variety of tasks which may include calculations, field work, report writing, construction quality assurance activities, coordination of project tasks, and participation in team meetings. These activities include construction observation, writing daily field reports, and coordinating with the Engineer and Contractor. This position will operate from our Knoxville, Tennessee office. The ability to travel within the region with overnight stays is required. Your Key Responsibilities Daily construction monitoring and reporting, checking for conformance with plans and specifications. Begins communicating with and making recommendations to Project Manager, design professionals, client, owner, developer, or contractor, but does not direct the means or methods of construction. Provides the Project Manager with updates on project progress or delays to client, design professionals, and/or contractor. Reviews change orders and field orders for reasonableness of pricing and constructability. Reviews requests for information, submittals, construction schedules, shop drawings and pay applications. Prepares documents and maintains file management of project-related information including correspondence, reports, and pictures. Perform civil engineering tasks which may include engineering drawings, specifications, calculations, engineering reports, cost estimates, design criteria, and prepare applications for regulatory agencies. Assist in the preparation of engineering project documents, client presentations, client contact and communication pertaining to specific project deliverables. Recognize when technical problems are developing and initiates appropriate corrective actions.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of construction principles, techniques and procedures, occupational hazards and safety precautions. Safety first mindset and ability to foster a safety culture.
  • Takes initiative on tasks and in coordinating with other members of the project team, obtaining and sharing necessary information.
  • Strong organizational skills and understanding of task assignment and schedule.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to solve problems using sound professional judgment, creativity and innovation.
  • General understanding of concepts of relevant areas of civil engineering design, including gravity and pressure systems, geotechnical, survey, storm water/drainage design, road design, erosion and sediment control, and grading.
  • Understanding of all phases of engineering document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
  • Recognizes when technical problems are developing and initiates appropriate corrective actions using sound professional judgment, creativity and innovation.
  • Ability to interpret sketches, drawings and other similar material.
  • Developing ability to effectively discuss project issues with clients and reviewing agencies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering or Engineering Technology.
  • Previous relevant internship preferred
  • Position will work in both a field and office setting. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Must be available to travel for out-of-town projects when needed.
  • Typical office environment working with computers and working at a desk for long periods of time.

Nice To Haves

  • AutoCAD Civil3D experience is preferred but not required.
