About The Position

The Assistant Club Manager in Training (AMIT) works closely with the Club Manager to provide leadership and direction within the club, driving overall club performance, particularly for the departments they directly manage. This role prepares individuals for one of three Assistant Club Manager positions: Merchandising, Perishables, or Member Experience, with focused development in their designated track. The AMIT ensures consistent execution of policies and procedures, a positive member service experience, Grand Opening Look Daily (GOLD) standard club conditions, and provides overall leadership. A key function is developing talent, displaying leadership, and consistently delivering results. The AMIT leads audit compliance, collaborates with Business Partners, and oversees onboarding, certification, and training for food safety and operational excellence. This role also serves as Manager on Duty (MOD) as needed, taking full responsibility for club operations, team leadership, and Member engagement during assigned shifts. A valid ServSafe Food Safety Certification is required and must be maintained, and a forklift license may be required yearly. In Florida, a qualifier certification for retail propane oversight is necessary, with BJ’s covering associated costs and training.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience as a retail store, supermarket, or warehouse operations manager.
  • A strong drive for results and solid work ethic.
  • Must be honest, straight-forward and committed to providing high levels of service to members.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Must be able to lead and motivate a large team.
  • Solid understanding of shrink controls, staff development, merchandising, customer service, problem solving, and conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, including managing/supervising cross-functional teams, training team members, and driving and communicating results.
  • Knowledge of store operations, membership, front-line, gas station, tire bay, maintenance, receiving, and omni procedures.
  • Basic computer knowledge (MS Word, MS Excel, Email).
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Servsafe certification.
  • Forklift operator required (implies ability to operate or get certified).
  • Open shift availability.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • A valid ServSafe Food Safety Certification is required and must be maintained in good standing.
  • May require yearly certification for a forklift license.
  • In Florida, this role must obtain a qualifier certification through the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services for retail propane oversight.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic department leadership and oversee daily operations across assigned departments (Merchandising, Perishables, or Member Experience).

  • Monitor Member engagement and support the team in resolving Member issues.
  • Achieve financial performance by meeting or exceeding Labor and Supply Plans and driving profitability.
  • Acquire deep knowledge of key metrics and reporting for total club and department performance.
  • Manage the full hiring process for assigned departments, including interviewing, staffing, onboarding, and certification.
  • Oversee labor planning and scheduling, adjusting coverage as needed.
  • Drive sales, inventory control, and shrink management through operational processes.
  • Uphold “close to open” standards for departmental readiness.
  • Lead department talent management, including performance reviews, mentoring, promotions, and succession planning.
  • Utilize club-specific tools and reporting for decision-making and identifying opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance and safety, enforcing policies (food safety, OSHA, RIST, cold chain) and leading audits.
  • Support special initiatives, merchandising transitions, and facility maintenance.
  • Perform cross-functional support as needed and execute daily tasks via BJ’s MY WORK System.
  • Operate forklifts safely if assigned, and maintain required certifications.
  • Maintain regular, predictable, full attendance.
