About The Position

Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital is currently seeking an Assistant Clinical Manager for Mother Infant Care Unit (MIU). This position supports patient care and is responsible for the 24-hour functioning of the MIU. Translates the organizational/system's mission and vision into operations through the design and provision of a quality, integrated service at a reasonable cost. While primarily responsible for the operational effectiveness and efficiency of the assigned unit, also demonstrates an expert awareness and facilitates the clinical operations. The MIU consists of 24 rooms and 29 beds; 5 rooms can accommodate semi-private occupancy, and a Level I newborn nursery area designed for the purpose of providing respite when needed, observation of high risk infants, and a procedure room. The philosophy of the unit is to foster family unity in a Baby Friendly environment while respecting parental choices regarding feeding and rooming- in, providing safe and therapeutic care. Health Care providers in this area mimic those in the Birth Center with the inclusion of pediatric care providers and lactation specialists. Registered Nurses in the MIU are certified in BLS and NRP. MIU provides supportive care of the mother/infant dyad with focus on the family, infant and self-care procedures and education. Both human milk and formula feeding are supported and educated to, with special emphasis on the benefits of human lactation.

Requirements

  • Associate of Science and actively enrolled in Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • California RN license
  • BLS from the American Heart Association
  • NRP
  • Comprehensive knowledge of nursing principles, theories, and practices, including infection control with demonstrated clinical expertise in area of practice.
  • Knowledge of administration of prescribed medications and treatments.
  • Related Clinical training/experience within last two years with evidence of leadership role

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
  • Certification in specialty area (CEN) preferred.
  • Knowledge of scheduling and time keeping preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides clinical consultation and supervision to nursing personnel and other staff as appropriate.
  • Participates in the clinical operations and patient care activities within the unit.
  • Assures patient care is consistently provided in accordance with organizationally/system-wide accepted standards of care and practice.
  • Demonstrates effective supervision of staffing resources by providing for appropriate skill mix and numbers of staff for the Department.
  • Models expert decision-making, collaboration and negotiation skills in collaboration with Clinical Manager.
  • Actively participates in clinical work processes.
  • Creates a sense of partnership and collegiality with clinical staff through consensus building, role clarification, and outcomes measurement activities.
  • Empowers point-of-service staff in decision-making/problem-solving through shared governance with an aim of quality (including cost-effectiveness) and continuity in care.
  • Follows up on any unusual occurrences or untoward incidents involving patients, employees, or applicable equipment/instruments or supplies in collaboration with leadership.
  • Collaborates in the identification, investigation, and implementation of improvement opportunities directly related to professional/patient care practices and patient outcomes.
  • Utilizes current quality improvement/problem solving knowledge and skills in day-to- day clinical operations.
  • Has a working knowledge of performance expectations for all assigned employees.
  • Maintains all mandatory certifications for the department and functions as staff nurse and charge nurse when needed.
  • Actively involved in the interviewing, hiring, coaching, and counseling of staff.
  • Supports staff in development and implementation of their individualized professional development plans.
  • Provides staff with informal and formal feedback on performance in conjunction with conflict resolution.
  • Responsible for identifying and precepting new charge nurses.
  • Provides clinical supervision for all disciplines.
  • Inspires and motivates team members by modeling leadership and professional behaviors, supports clinical staff with change, promotes engagement, and empowerment of staff.
  • Fosters a safe environment for staff to expand in their application of innovative care practices, teamwork skills, and accountability for organizational goals.
  • Responsible for scheduling of staff, all disciplines.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day schedule including replacement for sick calls, LOA, holes in schedule.
  • Collaborates with disciplinary action needed for staff.
  • Responsible for time keeping.
  • Implants a sense of authority and accountability in the patient care team resulting in a high degree of point of service effectiveness and productivity.
  • Collaborates with staff to establish a goal orientated serve philosophy which is organizationally consistent.
  • Works to ensure optimum organizational outcomes through consensus building, problem solving/opportunity seeking, resource allocation and coordinating and integrating services.
  • Advocates for change based on a synthesis of patient, family, physician and staff needs.
