About The Position

The Assistant City Attorney I or II will primarily serve as a municipal court prosecutor and handle municipal court litigation and appeals. In this role, the attorney is responsible for prosecuting criminal violations of the City's Municipal Code in municipal court. The attorney is also responsible for representing the City in administrative proceedings, including those before the City's Administrative Hearing Officer, as well as before the local liquor licensing authority. The attorney may also provide legal advice regarding municipal matters to various City departments and may also act as counsel to City boards and commissions as necessary.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree gained through a four-year college or university program.
Juris Doctorate degree or equivalent from accredited law school.
Licensed to practice law in the State of Colorado (or if application is pending, admission to practice within 60 days of hire date)
Minimum of five (5) years of legal practice experience.
Expertise founded on wide experience in a discipline or field requiring comprehensive understanding of a combination of involved practices, precedents, facts, and conditions, or in a broad group of business systems is expected.
At this level, knowledge has been supplemented by substantial work experience or enhanced by additional schooling in a specialized field to meet job requirements.
OR Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.
Communication skills to effectively convey information to elected officials, the public, and City employees both in person and on the telephone.
Oral, written, and listening communication skills, including the ability to accurately interpret what others are saying and convey messages, information, concepts, and details accurately and clearly.
Experience conducting negotiations with opposing parties and their attorneys related to administrative matters, criminal prosecutions, and civil litigation matters.
Organizational skills, including the ability to set and meet goals and deadlines, manage appointments, create schedules, coordinate and facilitate meetings, and make decisions.
Ability to work under pressure, manage multiple concurrent and competing tasks and responsibilities, and adapt to changing priorities while maintaining personal effectiveness.

Criminal prosecution experience is desired but not required.

Responsibilities

Serve as a criminal trial attorney in the Municipal Court by prosecuting municipal court cases. Conduct arraignments with defendants, pretrial conferences with defense attorneys, motions hearings before the judge, pretrial readiness hearings, bench trials before the judge, and jury trials.
Prosecute liquor enforcement matters; negotiate stipulated agreements to resolve liquor violations; perform legal research.
Prosecute code enforcement cases and provide legal advice and assistance to code enforcement officers related to code violations.
Provide sound legal advice and representation to the officers, employees, and agencies of the City including representing the City in court proceedings and administrative hearings before municipal and state courts and administrative agencies.
Provideâ¯caseâ¯and matterâ¯managementâ¯includingâ¯motionsâ¯practice, trial practice, andâ¯discovery. Draft legal briefs. Prepare and presentâ¯oral argument.
Represent the interests of the City, develop relationships with allied agencies, and coordinate inter-agency efforts thatâ¯are alignedâ¯with City projects.
Coordinate work with other attorneys and paralegals.
Conduct legal research on complex topics. Draft legal advice letters, briefs, memoranda, motions and/or responses, and written legal opinions for city employees, departments, boards, and commissions.
Prepareâ¯stipulations, plea agreements,â¯and other legal documents.
Draft ordinances, resolutions and other legal documents required to complete city projects and initiatives.
Attend meetings of city departments and work groups to provide analysis of legal issues and to provide legal advice necessary to develop appropriate policies and procedures and to formulate rules and regulations for the administration of City government.
Attend and participate as a representative of the City in meetings of local and regional governments and related entities regarding matters of importance to City projects.
Maintain subject-matter files in case management system. Update forms to reflect changes in legislation and case law. Develop training materials and other client communications.
Participate in continuing legal education programs.
