About The Position

The Assistant Chief Housing Project Engineer is responsible for the operation of a large building or group of buildings. A position in this class is a highly important operating and custodial engineering position involving the responsibility for the efficient and economic maintenance of the buildings. The incumbent to this position applies technical knowledge in the operation of various types of heating systems and is responsible for supervising and directing subordinate engineers and the general maintenance force. Administrative supervision is received from the Chief Housing Project Engineer or a higher ranking person but incumbents have considerable leeway for independent judgment in maintaining approved standards of operation and maintenance.Assists in the planning and directing of the work of subordinate employees covering all building and mechanical trades; Processes work orders and a variety of requests and/or complaints from tenants; Directs the operation and maintenance of boilers, pumps, stokers, conveyors, steam and water piping and other electrical and mechanical equipment or installation in any type of heating plant or group of plants; Performs inspections, maintains records and reports on operation and maintenance; Supervises and inspects work performed by private contractors; Assists in the preparation of contract specifications, operating budgets, etc; May be required to drive to and from work sites; Performs related work as required.Promotional Continuous and permanent status in any city department in the Stationary Engineering Series as a First Class Engineer Custodian, First Class Stationary Engineer, Junior Housing Project Engineer, Second Class Engineer Custodian, Second Class Stationary Engineer, Senior Housing Project Engineer, or Senior First Class Stationary Engineer for one year.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the construction, operation and maintenance requirements of heating plants and auxiliary equipment
  • Good knowledge of heating, ventilating and plumbing systems, including related electrical and mechanical trades
  • Good knowledge of mechanical trades and tools relating to building maintenance
  • Good knowledge of costs and standards relating to custodial operations
  • Ability to supervise the work of others
  • Ability to get along well with others
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position
  • Possession of a current Chief Stationary Engineer License issued by the City of Buffalo and in accordance with city ordinances that must be presented at time of filing application and maintained during employment
  • Possession of a current NYS Driver's License that must be presented at time of appointment
