What this job involves: The Assistant Chief Engineer plays a key role in overseeing daily operations, maintenance, and management of all building systems and equipment in a critical environment. This position requires extensive mechanical expertise to ensure optimal performance of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and building automation systems while maintaining the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and tenant satisfaction. You'll directly contribute to JLL's operational excellence by ensuring 100% uptime of critical building systems through proactive maintenance, expert troubleshooting, and strategic oversight of contractor activities. This role demands participation in a 24/7 on-call schedule rotation and readiness to respond to urgent situations outside normal working hours, including severe weather, equipment failures, and emergencies, ensuring continuous building operations and tenant safety.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Valid driver's license required
  • Previous hands-on experience working with commercial building equipment including generators, UPS, chillers, and HVAC systems
  • Strong knowledge of electrical systems, HVAC, fire safety, and backup power systems in critical applications
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting abilities with common building equipment and systems
  • Physical ability to use ladders up to 30 ft, work from heights, climb stairs and navigate rooftops to access equipment
  • Position requires excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written

Nice To Haves

  • Technical certification or training in HVAC, electrical, or mechanical systems
  • Experience with building automation systems and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)
  • Background in critical facility environments such as data centers or mission-critical operations
  • Knowledge of energy management and optimization practices
  • Experience with emergency response procedures and protocols
  • Familiarity with regulatory compliance requirements for commercial building operations
  • Previous experience in contractor oversight and project coordination

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and optimize building systems performance including chillers, boilers, cooling towers, air handling units, and building automation systems
  • Conduct regular inspections of mechanical equipment and systems to identify potential issues and ensure preventive maintenance schedules are maintained
  • Perform complex mechanical troubleshooting and repairs on HVAC systems, pumps, motors, and related equipment
  • Prioritize all preventive maintenance, corrective and emergent work orders for the site including annual, monthly, weekly, and daily schedules
  • Oversee contractor work and ensure compliance with specifications and building standards while maintaining quality control
  • Ensure all mechanical systems operate in compliance with local codes, regulations, and safety standards
  • Maintain accurate records of equipment maintenance, repairs, and system modifications for regulatory and operational purposes
