About The Position

The Western Sugar Cooperative has an opportunity for an Assistant Chemist. This position is responsible for the accurate collection, analysis, recording and reporting of all relevant process data/control. The assistant chemist is the first line of supervision in the lab and manages day to day lab activities and lab personnel.

Requirements

  • Associates of science degree or some classes in math and/or science. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Full understanding of standard laboratory methods and testing practices
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Proficient in computer systems (Excel, Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, LIMS/WIMS, SAP)
  • Leadership, organizational, and training skills
  • Friendly, results oriented, and collaborative.
  • Self-starter and possesses the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Solid leadership and influencing skills.
  • Understanding of food safety and quality assurance

Responsibilities

  • Uphold defined testing, product quality, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Order and provide accurate inventory of the laboratory supplies and materials.
  • Assist in auditing quality and sanitation practices and policies to ensure they are effectively in place.
  • Responsible for making sure all lab employees adhere to company policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for performing daily and weekly sugar process extraction in a timely manner.
  • Troubleshoot lab equipment.
  • Ensure cleanliness and organization of the laboratory.
  • Maintain all lab documentation such as data logs, reports, and QA records.
  • Provide training to WS employees.
  • Take measurements of tank inventory
