About The Position

Reports to: Director, Public Engagement FLSA: United States of America (Exempt) Employment Status: Temporary/Part time Summary: Learning and Civic Engagement The High Museum of Art’s Learning and Civic Engagement Department connects people with art and ideas to inspire better civic life. We activate the Museum’s collections and exhibitions with inclusive learning opportunities, and we collaborate to share creative practices alongside art and artists. Our work cultivates growth through inquiry and strengthens people’s connections with themselves, one another, and the wider world. Summer Camp The High Museum Summer Art Camp is a hands-on art day camp for children in rising kindergarten through rising eighth grade. Eight different week-long topics are available during the summer months providing age-appropriate art exploration and creation. Each week, more than 80 campers participate, with up to 15 dedicated camp staff implementing and supporting the program. This Role The Assistant Camp Leader supports the summer camp program in collaboration with the Camp Leader and the Associate Manager of Public Engagement. The ideal candidate will have outstanding organizational skills, a friendly and energetic demeanor, and will demonstrate a passion for working with people of all ages and from diverse backgrounds. The Assistant Camp Leader is responsible for aiding camp staff in all aspects of camp, including overseeing supplies, workshop management and upkeep, camper supervision, substituting, and administrative tasks when applicable. Additionally, the Assistant Camp Leader oversees aftercare each day along with the aftercare assistant. The Assistant Camper Leader aids the Camp Leader in leading these efforts, with responsibilities including but not limited to:

Requirements

  • High school graduate
  • Previous experience working with children required
  • Demonstrated experience in customer service

Nice To Haves

  • Current undergraduate studies in visual art and/or education preferred.
  • 1-2 years working in youth camp or class environment preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching or working administratively within camps, youth classes, and/or out-of-school programming for children

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all supplies and inventory for camp, in collaboration with the Camp Leader.
  • Provides direct assistance with campers in workshops, during lunches/snack times, and in galleries as needed.
  • Assists with daily, weekly, and summer-long set-up, maintenance, and clean-up of camp spaces and supplies.
  • Relieve and assist staff as needed for breaks, emergencies, tardies/absences, and when extra help is needed.
  • Remain visible and accessible to staff, campers, and caregivers.
  • Check in daily with all camp staff for any needs or issues.
  • Act as a substitute when needed.
  • Assists with daily pick-up; ensure that all campers are delivered safely and accurately from workshop to caregiver.
  • Communicate with all pertinent staff and camper needs, issues, and concerns to Camp Leader and Assistant Director, Public Engagement in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for assisting with classroom clean-up and end of day routine.
  • Responsible for picking up all aftercare students and moving them to aftercare classroom.
  • Run check-out, according to High Museum guidelines, as caregivers arrive for aftercare carpool.
  • Ensure all campers are picked up safely and by authorized caregivers.
  • Implement activities such as coloring, reading, games, and movies during aftercare hours.
  • Other duties may be assigned.
