About The Position

The Assistant Camp Director is a full-time seasonal leadership position responsible for assisting the Camp Director and overseeing the quality, safety, and execution of daily summer camp programming. Under the limited supervision of the Camp Wabansi Director, this role supervises daily activities, coordinates cabin groups and program areas, and ensures a consistent, high-quality camper experience. As a key on-site leader, the Assistant Camp Director provides guidance, supervision, and operational support to promote a positive, inclusive, and safe camp culture. This position works Monday-Friday from the start of June through the middle of August, varying between the hours of 7:00am - 5:00pm with some Thursday overnights required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent required; college coursework in child development, education, recreation, leadership, or related field preferred.
  • At least one season of prior camp experience required; leadership or supervisory experience in camp or youth development preferred.
  • Must be at least 21 years old ; 25+ years of age preferred.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations and think flexibly in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to manage conflict, provide behavior guidance, and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certifications required prior to camp start (training available).
  • Lifeguard certification strongly preferred; an attempt at lifeguard certification upon hire is required (course and paid training time provided).
  • Ability to participate in physically active programming.
  • Access to reliable transportation to travel to and from assigned work location on a daily basis, including bus sites and camp.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and oversee the daily implementation of progressive program areas and cabin group rotations by organizing schedules, resources, and staff direction to ensure high-quality, safe, and engaging camper experiences.
  • Provide supervision, coaching, and support to Camp Counselors by conducting daily observations, check-ins, and performance guidance to maintain program quality, professionalism, and compliance with camp policies.
  • Create and assign weekly cabin groups and program area rotations, including lifeguard scheduling in collaboration with the Waterfront Supervisor, by analyzing camper needs, staffing levels, and program requirements to ensure balanced groups and smooth program flow.
  • Guide and assist staff in planning and facilitating activities by offering direction, tools, and best practices to deliver consistent, developmentally appropriate programming across all areas.
  • Coordinate weekly themed Choice activities by gathering camper interests, finalizing group assignments, and distributing schedules to ensure campers have meaningful and engaging activity options.
  • Provide short-term counselor coverage by stepping into cabin or program roles during staff absences, breaks, or transitions to ensure uninterrupted supervision and program consistency.
  • Provide active leadership presence and behavior guidance for campers, staff, and teen leaders by modeling positive practices, mediating conflicts, and resolving issues to support a respectful and inclusive camp environment.
  • Serve as the acting on-site supervisor in the Camp Director’s absence by overseeing operations, making timely decisions, and communicating needs to ensure continuity of leadership and safety - assist with any and all Camp Director responsibilities as-needed.
  • Provide on-site supervision during Thursday Overnight experiences on an alternating schedule with the Assistant Camp Director to ensure camper safety, teen leader support, and successful overnight program delivery.
  • Ensure participant, staff, and facility safety by enforcing camp rules, YMCA policies, abuse-prevention practices, and emergency procedures, and by responding as a first responder when needed to maintain a safe camp environment.
