About The Position

The Office of the Attorney General is seeking Virginia licensed attorneys to join the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit’s (MFCU) Civil Litigation Unit to investigate and litigate health care fraud whistleblower lawsuits filed under the Virginia Fraud Against Taxpayers Act in state and federal courts. The MFCU’s cases involve complex civil investigations and litigation against a variety of defendants including pharmaceutical companies, drug manufacturers, and medical providers. The MFCU is seeking qualified, self-motivated candidates to manage health care fraud investigations and cases from inception to conclusion as a member of a multidisciplinary team of attorney(s), investigators, and auditors. The attorney will be based in Richmond, and the selected candidate will participate in joint federal-state investigations including the possible litigation of matters in federal court. Depending on the needs of the case, the position may be utilized to support parallel proceedings coordinated with federal law enforcement. Employment is conditioned upon a favorable completion of a background check. If needed, the selected applicant must be able to secure and maintain an appointment as a Special Assistant United States Attorney.

Requirements

  • Applicants must have graduated from an accredited law school.
  • Applicants must be admitted to the Virginia State Bar or eligible by reciprocity and in good standing with all jurisdictions where admitted.
  • Excellent oral, analytical, written, and interpersonal communication skills are required as evidenced by writing sample and references.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines.
  • Skill in exercising sound judgment and effective decision-making.
  • Ability to receive and respond positively to constructive feedback.
  • Travel requirements will vary depending on the needs of the case.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience handling matters involving health care, and health care law.
  • Complex civil litigation experience in both state and federal court.
  • Experience conducting legal analysis involving complex statutory and regulatory schemes at the state and federal levels, including applying legal analysis to fact situations and making recommendations.
  • Candidates who are proficient with using electronic discovery platforms, including Relativity.
