About The Position

Otterbein University is in search of an Assistant Athletic Trainer who is responsible for providing evidence-based, patient-centered care to student-athletes participating in NCAA Division III sports. Assist the Head Athletic Trainer in all aspects of our regionally and nationally competitive Division III program, featuring 23 sports.   Responsibilities also include coverage of assigned practices and events. This role requires expertise in injury evaluation and rehabilitation, maintaining robust documentation, and demonstrating excellent communication skills. Additionally, the Assistant Athletic Trainer will serve as a preceptor for entry-level master's students in athletic training.    This position is an exempt, full-time position with a one-year appointment with option for renewal. Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in athletic training or entry level master's degree in athletic training is required.
  • BOC Certification
  • Ohio State Licensure eligible
  • Healthcare CPR Certified
  • Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written English skills including grammar.
  • Must be competent in general math.
  • Strong foundation in evidence-based athletic training practices.
  • Expertise in injury evaluation and rehabilitation techniques.
  • Excellent documentation and record-keeping skills.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Proficiency in using electronic medical records and athletic training software.
  • Must possess excellent attention to details; must be a team player and interact collegially with co-workers and other constituencies. Must possess excellent customer service skills. Must possess strong organizational skills. Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment in unusual or new situations.  Must be able to work independently and must retain confidential information.
  • Requires travel for varsity and junior varsity events.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree is preferred
  • Previous experience in an athletic training role, preferably at the collegiate level
  • Experience in a clinical setting and as a preceptor is highly desirable

Responsibilities

  • Provide athletic training coverage for assigned home and away games, practices, and other athletic events.
  • Travel with teams to away competitions as needed, ensuring comprehensive care for student-athletes.
  • Perform detailed evaluations of athletic injuries, utilizing best practices and clinical expertise.
  • Develop and oversee rehabilitation programs tailored to the specific needs of each student-athlete.
  • Continuously update and refine rehabilitation protocols based on the latest research and clinical guidelines.
  • Deliver patient-centered care that prioritizes the individual needs and well-being of each student-athlete.
  • Engage in active listening and empathetic communication to understand and address athlete concerns.
  • Involve athletes in the decision-making process regarding their treatment and rehabilitation plans.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor evidence-based injury prevention programs for student-athletes.
  • Conduct comprehensive pre-participation physical examinations and accurately assess athletic injuries.
  • Provide immediate care for acute athletic injuries and medical emergencies both on and off the field.
  • Design and supervise individualized rehabilitation programs using the latest evidence-based practices.
  • Coordinate with team physicians and other healthcare providers for referrals, follow-up care, and comprehensive treatment plans.
  • Facilitate communication between team physicians, athletes, and coaching staff.
  • Assist in scheduling appointments and ensuring continuity of care.
  • Communicate effectively with athletes, coaches, physicians, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Provide clear and concise updates on athlete status, treatment plans, and rehabilitation progress.
  • Conduct educational workshops and training sessions for athletes and staff on health-related topics.
  • Maintain precise and detailed records of all treatments, rehabilitation activities, and medical histories.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional, NCAA, and state documentation standards and guidelines.
  • Utilize electronic medical records and athletic training software efficiently.
  • Prepare and submit insurance claim forms for athletic injuries.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of all required documentation for insurance purposes.
  • Liaise with insurance companies, student-athletes, and their families to facilitate the claims process
  • Assist in the maintenance and organization of the athletic training facilities.
  • Ensure all equipment is clean, safe, and in good working condition.
  • Manage inventory of supplies and equipment, ensuring availability and proper storage.
  • Serve as a preceptor for entry-level master's students in athletic training.
  • Mentor and guide students through practical experiences, fostering their professional development.
  • Evaluate and provide constructive feedback on student performance and skills.
