The Assistant Athletic Trainer provides comprehensive athletic training and sports medicine services to SDSU student-athletes under the direction of the Senior Associate Athletic Director of Athletic Medicine. This role is responsible for injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and emergency care for assigned varsity teams, while also supporting administrative operations within Athletic Medicine. The position plays a vital role in safeguarding the health, safety, and performance of student-athletes while upholding NCAA, university, and medical compliance standards.

  • Provide direct athletic training care for assigned varsity teams, including injury evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-play planning. (Team currently assigned to Women’s Swim & Dive.)
  • Deliver on-field medical coverage for practices, competitions, travel, off-season training, and championship events.
  • Implement injury prevention strategies, emergency response protocols, and rehabilitation programs in collaboration with healthcare professionals.
  • Communicate injury status and treatment plans with coaches, physicians, and athletic medicine staff.
  • Maintain accurate medical records and assist with administrative, facility, and compliance-related duties.
  • Mentor and supervise athletic training students and interns.
  • Equivalent to bachelor’s degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology or related field of study or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities. Course work must include completion of the Board of Certification (BOC) curriculum requirements.
  • Current knowledge of medical supply vendors, quality, and costs.
  • Must possess strong interpersonal and communications skills to develop effective working relationships with athletes and serve as a liaison among athletes, coaching staff, parents, physicians, and other health professionals.
  • Certification by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification.
  • Possess and maintain certification in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and first aid. Must stay current with these certifications and submit proof to the Senior Associate Athletic Director of Athletic Medicine.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain a California driver’s license within 10 days of hire.
  • Experience in assigned sport at collegiate, international, and/or professional team level as a certified Athletic Trainer for two to five years beyond Bachelor’s degree, which may include a graduate assistantship is preferred.
  • Proficiency with Biodex, SwimEx, and Alter-G .
  • Additional credentials of advance study in an athletic training related subject matter. Examples are: functional evaluation/rehabilitation, instrumented or manual soft tissue mobilization, Kinesiotape, etc.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word & Excel.
  • Prior experience performing inventory, budget, and insurance duties in a sports medicine environment.
