About The Position

The Department of Music in the College of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Lowell invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track or tenured faculty position in Composition for New Media, to begin September 2026. We seek an artist-scholar whose creative and pedagogical work integrates music theory, composition, and technology to engage contemporary practices in sound and music for emerging media. The successful candidate will join a dynamic department dedicated to preparing students for careers in music performance, production, and innovation. Position Overview: The successful candidate will teach courses in areas including Digital Orchestration, Arranging, Songwriting, Music for Multimedia, Synthesis, DAW Production, Music for Games, Interactive Music, Sound Design, and Applied Composition. Faculty in this role are expected to: Develop and teach courses across theory, composition, and new media; Maintain an active record of creative and/or scholarly work; Mentor undergraduate students in composition and interdisciplinary creative projects; and Contribute to departmental and university service, including curriculum development and program initiatives. We welcome applicants whose work connects composition with new media applications, including but not limited to: Game music and interactive audio Music for film, television, or other multimedia contexts Commercial and popular music production Sound design, synthesis, or applied composition for digital platforms. Requirements

  • Terminal degree in Music or a closely related field (e.g., DMA, PhD, DA, DFA, MFA) by the time of appointment.
  • Evidence of strong creative and/or scholarly achievement commensurate with the rank applied for, which may include published compositions, live performances, installations, and other musical output, as well as juried articles, books, or other publications in print.
  • Professional or creative experience in at least one area of new media composition (e.g., game audio, film/TV scoring, multimedia composition, commercial music production, or sound art).
  • Evidence of effective college-level instruction in composition.
  • Commitment to inclusive teaching and mentorship of students from diverse backgrounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching contemporary music theory and musicianship.
  • Record of curricular development or program design in music technology or composition.
  • Experience mentoring student creative projects in new media or interdisciplinary contexts.
  • Collaborative experience with artists, designers, or technologists in multimedia, gaming, or interactive media environments.
