About The Position

The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences is seeking a board-certified or board-eligible Emergency Medicine Physician. This role offers the opportunity to work within a growing academic program affiliated with a large community hospital, supporting education, clinical care, and research. The physician will provide high-quality, patient-centered care in a fast-paced Emergency Department, managing a wide range of acute conditions in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team. Faculty and residents provide care across a high-volume network, including the Level 1 Trauma Center at Toledo Hospital and Ebeid Children's Hospital Emergency Department (~105,000 visits annually), as well as the Level 2 Trauma Center at University of Toledo Medical Center. The physician will evaluate and treat acute conditions, collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, and support resident and student education. The role includes 8–10 hour day and night shifts, with weekend, holiday, and additional coverage as needed. Position Highlights: Number of shifts per week: 3-4 shifts, 8-10 hour days Team of 15 ER Docs and 1-2 APPs Average Patients Per Day: 100 Current Coverage by APPs: 11 am to 11 pm "12 hours shift" Current Coverage by Docs: 24 hours coverage, 4 shifts, "8am to 4 pm, 10am to 7 pm, 4 pm to 12 am, 11pm to 8am"

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine or Doctor or Osteopathic Medicine
  • Required Board Certified or Board Eligible by the American Board of Emergency Medicine
  • Current and unrestricted licensure in the State of Ohio required, prior to beginning the position
  • Valid DEA license
  • ACLS, PALS, and ATLS certification preferred
  • Excellent clinical judgment and decision-making skills
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities
  • Ability to remain calm and effective under pressure

Responsibilities

  • Provide immediate medical care to patients presenting with urgent or emergent conditions
  • Perform thorough assessments including history taking, physical examinations, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests
  • Develop and implement treatment plans, prescribe medications, and perform necessary procedures (e.g., suturing, intubation, central line placement, etc.)
  • Collaborate with nurses, specialists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate care
  • Stabilize critically ill or injured patients and determine appropriate disposition (admission, transfer, or discharge)
  • Ensure accurate, timely documentation of clinical encounters in the electronic medical record
  • Supervise and mentor residents, medical students, or advanced practice providers as needed
  • Comply with hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory standards
