About The Position

St. Mary's University School of Law invites applications for multiple full-time Assistant, Associate, or Full Professors of Practice to teach in St. Mary's Bar Exam Success Program, including one professor to serve also as the Director of Bar Exam Success. All positions are full-time, non-tenure track positions. At a minimum, Professors of Practice will be hired for a term of two or more years with the opportunity for promotion and renewal for good performance at the end of the initial contract term. Salary will be commensurate with experience and dependent on rank. Salary for a 9-month contract as Professor of Practice will range from $80,000 to $105,000. Salary of the Director of Bar Exam Success will range from $95,000 to $110,000. Opportunities may be available for additionally compensated teaching or writing. While scholarship is not a requirement of the position, research grants may be available. Successful Bar Exam Success Program Professors of Practice are team-oriented and collaborative, committed to excellence in teaching, and demonstrate passionate dedication to their students. Successful candidates will be joining a dynamic, diverse, and collegial team of faculty actively engaged in redeveloping the Law School's Bar Exam Success Program to position both the Program and its students for national success. These positions are student-facing and require a campus presence, except when teaching online classes. Professors of Practice in our Bar Exam Success Program will teach upper-level courses, including a three-hour Bar Preparation for Credit course and our bar coaching program, Raise the Bar . The Bar Exam Success Program involves extensive student meetings, planning and execution of workshops, data tracking, and providing feedback on written work throughout the February and July bar cycles. St. Mary's partners with Helix, and students in the Class of 2027 and beyond will all be provided their bar prep course. Professors of Practice will, among other things, participate on committees, teach classes, regularly meet with individual students, and provide extensive feedback on written work. Professors of Practice also assist with academic workshops, orientation planning and execution, and course planning and materials for the future academic year. St. Mary's has a full-time day and online part-time evening program. Professors of Practice will teach in either or both based on the needs of the office and the law school. The Director of Bar Exam Success leads the Law School's Bar Exam Success Program, including developing curricula and providing personnel oversight and mentorship to Bar Exam Success Professors of Practice and coaches teaching in the Program. The Director will also teach courses in the Bar Exam Success curriculum, counsel students, assess and grade written work, manage data systems, and report bar passage statistics to the law faculty and administration.

Requirements

  • J.D. degree from an accredited law school and admission to at least one state bar
  • Strong Academic record and e xc elle n t w ri t i n g s k i l l s
  • At least two years of legal work experience post-JD graduation
  • For the Director of Bar Exam Success - ability to lead, mentor, and train other Professors of Practice and coaches in teaching methods and curriculum development
  • Able to travel and work some evenings and weekends

Nice To Haves

  • Prior teaching experience in bar-related skills
  • Experience on a law journal and/or judicial clerkship
  • For the Director of Bar Exam Success - prior experience directing a Bar Exam Success
