About The Position

Reporting to the Process Manager, the Assay Lab Supervisor will be responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally sound operation of the assay lab including sample preparation, analysis, and reporting. They will support Mine, Process, and Technical Services departments by providing timely and accurate testing and determinations. The Assay Lab Supervisor is ultimately responsible occupational health and safety of the assay lab employees. This includes business improvement projects to ensure meeting regulatory standards. The schedule for this position is 4 days on at the mine site located about 45-miles north of Juneau, accessible only through company transportation, and 3 days off.

Requirements

  • Ability to work safe and promote safe behavior in others.
  • Minimum 3 years in a laboratory or similar supervisory role.
  • High School Diploma or GED, or equivalent work history.
  • Complete understanding of quality control/quality assurance practices.
  • Capable of creating statistical control limits and tracking.
  • Understand the principles of sampling theory and have a strong understanding of analytical methods required for the function of a mine/mill process control laboratory inclusive of fire assay, advanced instrumental analyses, basic metallurgical testing, and general analytical chemistry.
  • Knowledge of analytical procedures and equipment, troubleshooting equipment, and problem-solving ability.
  • Practical experience in a process plant and analytical/metallurgical laboratory environment.
  • Strong communication, customer service and collaboration skills
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage resources, and adapt to changing operational needs.
  • Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and a team-oriented mindset – being respectful, reliable, and easy to work with is just as important as technical skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel proficiency and utilization of other related software.
  • Sets high standards for self and others, builds trust and takes accountability.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with LIMS.
  • Preference given to Alaskan applicants.
  • BS degree in Chemistry.
  • Experience with statistical methods and their application software.
  • Working knowledge of fire assay, atomic absorption, sulfur analysis, insol procedures with other various lab experience and chemistry knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Maintaining accurate analytical records and timely reporting of results. Utilize and troubleshoot analytical and technical issues affecting laboratory performance.
  • Direct analytical activities and functions with emphasis on developing reliable and efficient methods of analysis by fully utilizing both internal and external expertise including coordinating external laboratory facilities as required.
  • Conduct QA/QC testing to validate analytical accuracy and efficiency.
  • Work closely with the Mine Operations, Technical Services, and Process departments on work requests and scheduling.
  • Communicate in advance any prospective analytical issues associated with the laboratory equipment and analysis reporting.
  • Progression review and regular performance evaluations of staff members.
  • Provide weekly and monthly statistical summaries for key process plant key performance indicators
  • Collaborate with mine, geology, and metallurgy on development of new ore bodies.
  • Evaluating facility requirements to meet regulatory emission standards (lead, silica) and manage improvement projects to accomplish safe workspaces.
  • Project management with outside contractors for any specialized analytical equipment support or supplemental analysis and management of the data collection system (LIMS).
  • Manage suppliers and inventory to track costs associated with operating the lab, and developing yearly budgets based on expected departmental sample volumes.
  • Other duties as assigned.
