About The Position

Statewide ASL Mentors provide individualized American Sign Language (ASL) instruction to Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students in both educational and home environments across New Mexico. As native ASL users with lived experience in Deaf culture, they foster students’ language growth through personalized one-on-one and small-group sessions tailored to each student’s developmental language and communication needs. ASL Mentors may be based at the NMSD campus in Santa Fe or live in communities statewide, with regular regional travel as part of the role. All responsibilities are carried out in accordance with the mission and vision of the New Mexico School for the Deaf.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university; or an Associate's degree from a two-year college or program.
  • Native user of American Sign Language.
  • The applicant must have fluency in American Sign Language or a willingness to acquire this fluency.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to think independently, problem solve and work with the whole team.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have working knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Excel, as well as various software packages including Microsoft Office.

  • Spanish skills are helpful in this position but are not required.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Statewide ASL Program Coordinator and members of the Statewide Educational Outreach team to provide high-quality ASL instruction to D/HH students, educational teams, and families across New Mexico.
  • Deliver ASL instruction in both in-person and virtual formats within a variety of settings, including family homes, public or charter schools, and community spaces.
  • Develop ASL instructional resources such as vocabulary materials, ASL storybooks, and supplemental learning materials to enhance language development for D/HH students, families, and educational teams.
  • Conduct ASL assessments for D/HH students to determine current skill levels and inform individualized instructional planning.
  • Plan and implement developmentally appropriate lessons; monitor and document D/HH student’s ASL progress over time.
  • Participate in or facilitate community events, outreach activities, and department-sponsored programs as assigned.
  • Maintain accurate records and submit required documentation in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate a professional, collaborative approach when building strong relationships with school staff, students, families, and NMSD colleagues.
  • Possess a valid NM driver’s license and the ability to travel statewide, including overnight stays.
