About The Position

The ASC Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting in both administrative and clinical tasks to ensure smooth operations within the medical office. This role involves preparing patients for surgery, assisting with preoperative care, and supporting physicians and nurses by providing patient information, medical history, and ensuring compliance with medical guidelines and protocols.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • No prior experience required, but previous experience in a medical setting is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of healthcare regulations, including HIPAA and safety protocols for infection control.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, and surgical teams.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in patient documentation and surgical preparation.
  • Ability to function in a high-stress, physically demanding environment.
  • Capable of manual dexterity, control precision, and exercising arm-hand steadiness.
  • Willingness to travel as needed and participate in ongoing training and professional development.
  • Proactive problem-solving abilities and capacity to anticipate the needs of the medical team.
  • Demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive, respectful, and professional work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Prep patient visit charts for the next day.
  • Interview patients to gather medical information and measure vital signs, weight, and height.
  • Prepare treatment rooms for patient examinations, maintaining cleanliness and organization.
  • Collect and log laboratory specimens.
  • Present patients’ information to providers before examinations.
  • Secure patient information, maintain confidentiality, and ensure compliance with HIPAA and diagnostic/procedure coding.
  • Safely escort patients from intake to exam rooms.
  • Help nurses in recovery when needed.
  • Greet patients warmly, explain treatment procedures, and ensure patients are ready for surgery (e.g., fasting, medication adjustments).
  • Assess patients for pre-op, ensuring NPO status, checking for pregnancy, blood thinners, and allergies, and ensuring the presence of a driver for post-op care.
  • Prepare and share responsibility for obtaining patient consent forms and handling discharges.
  • Document patient medical history, vital statistics, and test results in electronic health records (EHR).
  • Ensure surgical instruments are clean, sterilized, and appropriately handled.
  • Monitor equipment, including medical fridge temperatures, patient glucometer, and nurse call systems.
  • Perform venipuncture procedures correctly.
  • Ensure patient safety by following proper handling protocols and complying with safety guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
