About The Position

This position is accountable for ensuring the safe and efficient movement of traffic through work areas where construction, maintenance, access, road closures and utility permit work is being done through the development and application of proper temporary traffic control techniques and devices to ensure the maximum attainable degree of safety, convenience, and continuous and systematic inspection of highway projects to verify the application of specified techniques. The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking to hire an Arterial Temporary Traffic Control Supervisor. Requirements

  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois OR current registration as a Licensed Structural Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Four years of experience in civil engineering.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires successful completion of a background screening.
  • Requires extensive districtwide travel.
  • Requires the ability to work periods of overtime including occasional nights, early mornings, and weekends.
  • This position has been found to meet the requirements in section 4A-101 of the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act requiring the occupant/employee to file a Statement of Economic Interest. The Illinois Governmental Ethics Act (5 ILCS 420/4A et seq.) requires certain state officials and employees to file annual Statements of Economic Interest with the Office of the Secretary of State that will be made available for examination and copying by the public. All employees required to file a Statement of Economic Interest are also required to file the Supplemental Statement of Economic Interest with the Executive Ethics Commission. (See Executive Order 15-09) Fines and penalties apply to untimely filings.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) with emphasis on Chapters 2, 3, and 6.
  • Ability to make independent judgment decisions within departmental traffic policies and the MUTCD while applying traffic engineering principles.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures the inclusion of appropriate temporary traffic control plans in all highway improvements projects and that such plans comply with existing policies and procedures.
  • Ensures that the district contractor and utility and/or consultant personnel understand their respective responsibilities and are responsible for documentation.
  • Ensures that the inspection and reporting procedures for temporary controls promptly uncover deficiencies so that effective and timely revisions can be made.
  • Provides a record system that facilitates the monitoring of existing construction projects.
  • Assists continually in updating Arterial Traffic Control Design Standards and Special Provisions.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.
  • Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
