About The Position

Under the supervision of the Building Principal is responsible for teaching art education to pupils in grades K-5, and assists the staff of the school in the improvement and appreciation of art instruction. Helps pupils grow in their enjoyment, appreciation, and presentation of art through a variety of planned experiences through the use of diverse media.

Requirements

  • Possesses or qualify for a Virginia Collegiate Professional license with specific endorsement in the area to which assigned.
  • Possesses outstanding knowledge and skill in the assigned instructional area and demonstrates enthusiasm for teaching and the learning process.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of instructional strategies and skills related to scientifically-based research and its implementation.
  • Proficiency in the use of a variety of instructional technology including computers with experience in Microsoft Office, email and other applications.
  • Emotionally mature, objective and sensitive to people and their concerns.
  • Able to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain collaborative working relationships with students, families, staff, co-workers and community agencies.
  • Effectively demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions.
  • Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Familiarity with equity and inclusion frameworks.
  • Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Respects the worth, dignity and individual differences of others.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences to foster professional relationships and express and/or exchange ideas.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in the use of a variety of office/instructional equipment and technology with experience using Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and email.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and the community.

Responsibilities

  • Teaches skills in visual art understanding/appreciation, fundamentals, and creative process for all elementary pupils.
  • Plans/executes a balanced visual art program and organizes class time so that preparation and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
  • Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the visual art curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
  • Encourages students to develop individual artistic skills to the greatest extent possible.
  • Evaluates and assesses each pupil’s artistic and creative growth and artistic understanding.
  • Selects appropriate materials and instructional aids to enhance learning.
  • Communicates with parents and school staff on individual student’s progress.
  • Regular/occasional contact with parents, community members and outside agency personnel.
  • Takes all industry standard precautions to protect students, staff, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains appropriate state licensure; assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to keep materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date.
  • Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment.
  • Actively participates in and attends all required meetings.
  • Maintains confidentiality when appropriate.
  • Complies with and supports school division policies, regulations, procedures, and the HCPS Strategic Plan.
  • Effectively performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.
