About The Position

Orton Academy's Art Teacher is responsible for supporting the school's art program by preparing art instruction, organizing materials, and maintaining a safe and orderly environment that inspires the appreciation and creation of art. This position will occur 1-2 days per week, or as developed by the teacher and the school. Requirements

  • Associate's degree or coursework in Art Education, Fine Arts, or a related field.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to demonstrate art techniques clearly and patiently.
  • Basic computer skills for digital documentation and communication.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, staff, and students.
  • Adapt to changing classroom needs and student dynamics.
  • Encourage creativity and self-expression in a supportive manner.
  • Maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Art Education or Elementary Education with a focus on visual arts.
  • Prior experience working with children in an educational or recreational setting.
  • Experience assisting in art instruction or working in a studio/classroom environment.
  • Familiarity with elementary and middle school developmental stages and learning styles.
  • Supporting students with special needs or diverse backgrounds.
  • Assisting in organizing school events, exhibitions, or art fairs.
  • Basic principles of art and design (e.g., color theory, composition, media techniques).
  • Age-appropriate art curriculum and instructional strategies.
  • Safety procedures for handling art tools and materials.
  • Understanding of child development and behavior management.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation and set-up of art lessons and activities.
  • Support students during art instruction by offering guidance and encouragement.
  • Modify or adapt art activities to meet diverse learning needs and abilities.
  • Demonstrate techniques and use of materials when appropriate.
  • Encourage creativity and self-expression in students.
  • Provide positive reinforcement and constructive feedback.
  • Support students with special needs or those requiring additional help.
  • Help maintain a safe, clean, and organized art classroom.
  • Monitor and manage the use of art supplies and equipment to ensure safety.
  • Supervise students in the classroom and other areas as directed (e.g., hallways, during transitions).
  • Enforce classroom rules and routines to promote a positive learning environment.
  • Assist with the display and documentation of student artwork in hallways, classrooms, and digital platforms.
  • Photograph or scan student work for portfolios or school exhibitions.
  • Help organize student art shows or school-wide art events.
  • Help with inventory and ordering of art supplies.
  • Track usage of materials and report low stock to the lead teacher.
  • Assist in organizing and labeling supplies for easy student access.
  • Participate in discussions regarding student engagement and art program development.
  • Share observations about student progress and behavior with the lead teacher.
  • Collaborate with other teachers for cross-curricular art projects.
