About The Position

The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind is seeking an Art Teacher to serve as a member of the instructional team with specific duties to provide classroom instruction for students with deafness, blindness, visual impairments, deafblindness, or a sensory loss with other disabilities. The Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind (VSDB) is located in the historic, vibrant city of Staunton, Virginia. VSDB provides superior education for students who are deaf/hard of hearing, blind/vision impaired, deafblind, and deaf or blind with other disabilities. VSDB offers PreK-12 education with both residential and day student options. VSDB believes that disabilities are challenges not barriers and supports each student in their goal to be independent and to reach their highest academic potential! VSDB prepares students for life! Requirements

  • A minimum of a Baccalaureate Degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Hold or be eligible for a valid Virginia teaching license issued by the Board of Education with an endorsement in special education – hearing impairments preK-12, special education endorsements, or art education. The selected candidate will be required to obtain an additional endorsement in the applicable content area if not already completed.
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification required or must be obtained per school policies.
  • Hold a valid Virginia Driver’s license and submit for review by the DMV.
  • Knowledge of child growth and development, and special needs of children with disabilities
  • Ability to assess and document student progress according to best practice, including but not limited to pre-test and post-test assessments, and to use assessment data to guide instruction
  • Ability to design and implement appropriate instruction for children with hearing loss, deafness, deafblindness, visual impairments, and blindness.
  • Ability to develop effective instructional strategies and methods and the ability to differentiate instruction to meet diverse student needs ranging from age 2 - 22
  • Knowledge of a variety of art mediums and the ability to develop activities for students to apply their learning.
  • Proficiency level of “Advanced” in American Sign Language as measured by the Sign Language Proficiency Interview or agreement to acquire the specified level within three years
  • Ability to professionally and adequately communicate through written English language
  • Ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior
  • Ability to implement the requirements of individual student IEPs
  • Knowledge of technology to enhance communication and learning
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, administration, and parents and work using a team approach

  • Prefer experience in teaching in a classroom setting with special needs students who have sensory impairments
