The Area Manager for Housing & Residential Life supervises and assists in the development of full-time professional staff and key student staff/leaders in a specified area of campus and provides oversight of one or two committees. Reporting to the Senior Director for Housing & Residential Life, this position engages in a student-development-centric critical analysis of resident and student staff needs, and implementation of a robust on-boarding and development program for professional and paraprofessional staff, including the evaluation process.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in student development, student personnel, and/or a related field and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum three years’ experience with student developmental issues and strategies for implementing a comprehensive college/university residential program.
  • Experience demonstrating strong organizational, communication, teambuilding, and problem-solving skills required.
  • Student Development: Knowledge and formal education in development and/or educational learning theory with the demonstrated ability to apply to initiatives, projects, and daily work.
  • Organizational Leadership: Ability and willingness to make independent decisions, exhibiting sound and accurate judgment. Demonstrated ability to motivate professional staff and students. Ability to foster professional trust in the work environment.
  • Supervisory Skills: Ability to delegate work, set clear direction and manage workflow. Strong mentoring and coaching skills. Ability to train, develop, assess and offer feedback to staff members. Ability to foster teamwork among staff members.
  • Project Management Skills: Ability to prepare and present special projects with little supervision/oversight. Ability to meet deadlines and to take large complex projects and divide them into smaller achievable tasks organized into a plan. Strong, detail-oriented project management skills. Must be a self-starter.
  • Communication Skills: Effective interpersonal and customer service skills. Ability to assess when and how to communicate information. Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and professionally both orally and in writing. Ability to present information clearly and professionally one-on-one and in groups; ability to serve as a public face for the department within the University and to external audiences.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to make valid and reliable evaluation of information. Demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Learning Agility: Independent and innovative self-starter who can display an ability to learn rapidly and adapt quickly to changing situations.

Responsibilities

  • Staff Supervision: Provides and role models leadership and direction to staff, including student staff. Sets expectations, focus, and professional development plans. Provides coaching, mentoring and teaching to ensure staff meet industry standards. Manages the ‎‎administrative process for assigned staff including hiring, ‎evaluations, terminations, disciplinary procedures ‎and advocacy for salary ‎‎adjustments. Provides ongoing performance feedback, goal setting, and development plans for staff. Attends all student staff trainings and meetings. Maintains visibility in residential communities.
  • Student Staff Training & Leadership Development: Provides leadership for student staff (resident advisor, peer mentor, et al.) on-boarding and training processes. Develops and implements on-going development for student employees, including evaluations and improvement plans. Initiates and provides guidance for the Student Staff Training Committee.
  • Student Staff Recruitment & Selection: Provides leadership for student staff (resident advisor, peer mentor, et al.) selection process(es) including recruitment, screening, interview, placement, and all candidate communication. Works closely with BAO to ensure efficient University on-boarding. Initiates and provides guidance for the Student Staff Selection Committee.
  • Administration: Provides timely communication. Assists with the coordination and implementation of Housing & Residential Life departmental processes related to assignments, facilities, and marketing. Ensures staff participation and cooperation.
  • Crisis Response, Safety, & Security: Assists with follow-up for and communication regarding elevated on-going student concerns. Serves in the weekend and evening crisis response on-call rotation. Provides in-person response to emergencies when deemed necessary.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
