About The Position

The Area Business Director (ABD) is directly accountable for the management, profitability, and overall performance of the area business, leading Area Business Managers (ABMs) and Senior Area Business Managers (SABMs) through the effective implementation of objectives, strategies, and tactics. In this capacity, the ABD is a key member of a multidisciplinary team—including Marketing, Market Access, Field Operations, Patient Access Solutions, Training, Human Resources, Compliance, Legal, and Communications—working collectively to achieve both individual and team goals. Location: Field-based. Assigned Territory: The position requires travel up to >80% and a valid, active driver’s license. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, life sciences, or related field (advanced degree preferred).
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in pharmaceutical, biotech, and/or healthcare industry with demonstration of successful results.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of leadership experience, preferably in specialty sales.
  • Demonstrated leadership and people management skills.
  • Experience in Cross-functional collaboration required.
  • Strategic thinking and business acumen
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to foster a culture of collaboration and accountability
  • Able to travel up to 80%, may vary based on location.

Responsibilities

  • The ABD coordinates regular strategy meetings with Marketing and Market Access to align initiatives, resolve challenges, and ensure unified messaging and execution across all commercial channels.
  • Collaboration with Field Operations, Patient Access Solutions, and other internal partners is facilitated through ongoing communication and joint planning sessions, enabling rapid response to market dynamics and optimizing resource allocation.
  • The ABD is responsible for recruiting, coaching, and developing ABMs and SABMs to reach their highest potential. This includes setting clear performance expectations, providing feedback, and fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement that drives achievement of key results.
  • The ABD balances long-term strategic planning—such as market analysis and competitive positioning—with day-to-day operational management. Examples include overseeing territory sales activities, monitoring key performance indicators, and implementing tactical adjustments to meet evolving business needs.
  • The ABD cultivates and maintains strong relationships with key physician practices, hospitals and clinics, and patient advocacy organizations, acting as an ambassador for EMD Serono. This engagement provides valuable market insights to the broader organization and enhances the company’s reputation as a leader in science and technology.
  • The ABD consistently ensures compliance with all company policies, industry regulations, and government guidelines, upholding the highest ethical standards in all business activities.
