Archivist The Archivist will perform duties that facilitate the conservation, preservation, research and discovery of archives materials using international archives standards for historic materials. The Archivist will process, inventory, and perform descriptive cataloguing and finding aid creation of Archives collections. The Archivist will perform preliminary/preparatory processing of archives materials and will recommend, plan, and perform descriptive, processing, storage and handling interventions. Additionally, the Archivist will prepare materials for digitization and restoration projects and liaise with vendors and perform quality control and metadata verification for completed projects as well as perform research to support authentication, verification and strategic heritage communications.

Requirements

• Master's Degree of Information and Library Science; experience or certification in Archives/Special Collections preferred.
• 4 + years in at least two of the following.
• Descriptive Cataloging (original and copy)
• Processing
• Digitization
• Conservation
• Research
• High level understanding of preferred descriptive terms (controlled vocabularies) and ability to create and develop new terms, and new thesaurus structure, based on the specific needs of Cartier and following international standards.
• Knowledge of current/up-to-date basic preservation and conservation standards.
• Ability to assess physical condition of an object at a highly detailed level (Bibliographic Description).
• Ability to make evaluative judgements on care and interventions for various materials.
• Ability to assess and organize information to clearly communicate on it.
• Ability and willingness to travel.
• Occasional retail hours as necessitated by special events.
• Comfortable with some teaching/public speaking/presentation as necessitated by special events.

Responsibilities

• Maintain preservation and conservation standards for physical and digital archives materials: including routine maintenance, quality check/controls, condition statements & preliminary collections processing and assessments, propose, plan & carry out recommended interventions on currently untreated materials, with a focus on making currently unprocessed/un-inventoried collections accessible, searchable, and physically stable.
• Create & update condition reports for archives collections.
• Assess, recommend, plan, prepare materials, and carry out interventions for preservation of Archives collections.
• Maintain conditioning and before/after statements for large-scale and small-scale conservation projects.
• Temp/Humidity/Room Environment reporting.
• Maintain inventory & check in/out for treatments and loans.
• Collections assessments, processing, descriptive cataloging, and finding aid creation and maintaining/updating current information for current holdings and future/new acquisitions according to international standards for library and information science.
• Create aids for archives collections that are not yet processed and searchable.
• Support digitization projects (coordinating, quality control, metadata verification, and inventory/conditioning).
• Descriptive cataloging of archives collections for better access/discovery for collections that are not yet searchable in the M@RS database.
• Support cataloging/description projects of archives materials for key word searchable control of collections, including supporting development of preferred term dictionaries.
• Preliminary processing/reorganizing of digitized collections in databases for immediate access as interim step to full cataloging.
• Support custom database development, maintenance, and use for access & discovery projects.
• Develop a tutorial & user manual for database as it is currently and routinely update as developments occur.
• Propose & support developments as new needs present themselves.
• Use Archives collections to perform research to support research and conceptual inquiries related to brand heritage and production.
• Utilize databases for items/themes that are already processed and key-worded or searchable by number or client name.
• Perform manual searching through records collections when items are not yet keyworded/processed.
• Liaise with off-site repository for manual research through collections that are not searchable / visible in current databases.
• Communicate research results to inquiring parties.
