About The Position

Summary: Working under the general direction of the Branch Manager and within defined guidelines applying engineering principles and concepts learned from previous experience and/or formal education. Assist with engineering duties for design, construction administration, assessments, and investigations. Work includes engineering calculations and is performed on multiple projects simultaneously. Recognize, when there are better ways of doing things, research and recommend to broader organization and participate in implementation.

Requirements

  • Have working knowledge of materials and installation processes used in roofing, wall, and other envelope assemblies.
  • Have working knowledge of Building Codes and engineering calculations and use engineering judgement to apply these items to actual field conditions.
  • Ability to understand and develop project specifications, submittals, and other documentation, identify discrepancies between actual construction and project requirements, and articulate these discrepancies both verbally and in written reports.
  • Ability to operate equipment used in assessments and investigations, including infrared camera, electrical capacitance meters, water testing units, etc.
  • Full knowledge and understanding of Autodesk software, concepts, and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English fluently.
  • Word processing, Excel AutoCAD, and Adobe / Bluebeam skills.
  • High School graduate or equivalent. Technical school with an associate’s degree in architectural technology, architectural engineering or related engineering field preferred.
  • Experience in CAAD/Revit drafting, with a minimum of 2 years' experience in a professional workplace preferred.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, and various other construction documentation.
  • Typically, two or more years in a related field, preferably with a consulting and/or an engineering firm. Formal educational or technical programs in a relevant field or relevant certifications may count towards experience.
  • Ability to work in a sitting position in an office environment.
  • Sufficient physical ability to perform moderate lifting (approximately 50 pounds maximum).
  • Ability to stand or walk for prolonged periods of time.
  • Ability to climb ladders, scaffolds, and other access equipment.
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
  • Limited overnight travel is at times required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare engineering documents for use in construction activities. To prepare documents, collect and analyze field data of existing conditions, complete engineering calculations to determine design parameters and determine best solutions to resolve existing problems within budget limitations. Calculations and project documents are reviewed by more senior project management staff and are evaluated and sealed by a Professional engineer for accuracy and compliance with State Statues.
  • Perform drafting and preparation of client deliverables. This includes field investigations, written reports, detailed drawings, and specifications.
  • Assist with construction management duties. Perform monitoring during construction projects to ensure that contractors do work according to specifications provided by engineers. Duties include conducting initial meetings with contractors to describe the project, obtaining pricing from contractors, and reviewing to determine relevancy to the project and make recommendations to the client on award of the project. Ensure the final product follows engineered project documents, and coordinate any deficiencies observed with the contractor for resolution. Propose potential solutions to resolve conflicts identified during the work. Proposals are reviewed and approved by more senior project management staff.
  • Conduct assessments and investigations, with or without assistance from colleagues. Duties may include assembly of testing apparatuses, performing, and repairing destructive openings in roofing and wall systems, performing water testing, carrying tools/ladders, and other physical tasks. Prepare documentation describing the existing conditions and deficiencies observed and provide recommendations for improvements to existing conditions. Recommendations are reviewed and approved by more senior project management staff.
  • Use CADD software to create, modify and process technical drawings from field notes and hand sketches. Communicate with engineers and technicians about the properties of drawings.
  • Other duties as assigned.
