About The Position

Serves as an expert authority on cultural resource protection, historic preservation, and paleontology. This role focuses on ensuring compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and the Archaeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA) for projects on Indian trust lands.

Requirements

  • Must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Archeology under 36 CFR §800.2(a)(1).
  • Documented experience with ARPA, NHPA, and NEPA.
  • (Alaska Specific) Ability to catalog archaeological collections and work in extreme climates/remote locations.

Responsibilities

  • Field & Research: Conduct literature reviews, archival searches, field inventories, and site identification/recordation.
  • Analysis: Perform Historic and Cultural Landscape Analyses to identify landscape characteristics and historic contexts.
  • Permitting: Review applications for non-collection survey authorizations and make recommendations for ARPA and Antiquities Act Permits.
  • Documentation: Prepare draft and final reports summarizing findings, site condition assessments, and mitigation/treatment plans.
  • Coordination: Support federal officials in responding to applicants and coordinate data reporting across the BIA cultural resources program.
  • Tribal Engagement: Must have considerable experience in Government-to-Government consultations and coordinating with Tribal offices.
  • Efficiency: Ability to work within compressed timelines (e.g., reviewing some NEPA documents within 14–28 days)
