About The Position

The Archaeological Field Director will lead a variety of archaeological projects across the Southwest region, primarily focused within the state of Arizona. This role includes overseeing fieldwork, leading crews, and contributing to the successful completion of cultural resource management efforts.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field
  • Completion of a field school
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in Southwest archaeology
  • Permitted or permittable on Arizona State land, Arizona BLM lands, and USFS lands in Arizona as Field Director or Project Director
  • Proficient in prehistoric and/or historic archaeology in the Southwest
  • Proficient in documenting archaeological sites and isolates in the Southwest
  • Knowledgeable and experienced in applying State and Federal agency standards in survey and site documentation (e.g., Arizona State Historic Preservation Office, Arizona State Museum, US Forest Service, US Bureau of Land Management, etc.)
  • Ability to survey (walk/hike) an average of 50 acres/8 miles per day (not including resource documentation), while carrying personal health and safety equipment (i.e., personal water, sunscreen, etc.)
  • Ability to work long hours in moderate weather conditions (including high temperatures, fluctuating temperatures, and inclement weather, including rain and snow)
  • Ability to travel for extended periods of time
  • Ability to perform work duties independently and efficiently, while working in a team setting
  • Ability to follow instructions and make adjustments when provided feedback
  • Clear communicator, highly organized, motivated, thorough, accurate, dependable, and trustworthy
  • Excellent navigational skills (GPS and compass) and ability to navigate and drive 4WD vehicles over rough terrain
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English sufficient to perform job duties and to interact and communicate with employees and vendors

Nice To Haves

  • 2 years of field experience at the Crew Chief level or higher
  • Proficiency using tablets (Apple iPad or Samsung Galaxy) to document cultural resources
  • Proficiency with sub-meter GPS receiver
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123 applications (for phone or tablet)
  • Previous NHPA, NEPA, FERC, and/or other cultural or environmental trainings
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Authored multiple archaeological site forms and inventory reports

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a Field Director for archaeological projects across the Southwest
  • Plan and coordinate fieldwork
  • Coordinate with agencies to obtain and meet the requirements of project-specific permits
  • Oversees crews of archaeologists in the field, including mentoring and training field technicians
  • Lead fieldwork for Class III (intensive pedestrian) cultural resources inventories
  • Lead crews in the documentation of archaeological sites and isolates
  • Provide QA/QC of field data
  • Ensure conformance to field safety protocols
  • Complete pre-field research and Class I inventories
  • Complete NRHP eligibility evaluations
  • Complete detailed and accurate site forms meeting agency standards
  • Draft deliverables preparation and deliverable revisions
  • Conduct archaeological monitoring during various construction activities
  • Complete daily monitoring and/or inspection forms
  • Use hand-held field technology (i.e., ArcGIS phone/tablet application paired with sub-meter GPS receivers)
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance at work and meetings
  • Support, actively participate, and act in accordance with Wright’s and Eocene Environmental Group's culture of safety and employee ownership
  • Comply with applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations; maintains knowledge of and follows all company policies and procedures
