About The Position

The Arborist II performs journey-level arboriculture work and serves as a lead worker on urban forestry operations. This position conducts skilled pruning, removals, planting, and tree health care activities, and may operate aerial devices and specialized equipment. The Arborist II ensures jobsite safety and proper traffic control, provides technical guidance to other staff, and supports emergency response and storm operations as needed.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of progressive arboricultural experience.
  • High School Diploma.
  • ISA Certified Arborist certification.
  • ISA Tree Worker certification or ability to obtain within 12-18 months of hire.
  • CPR/First Aid current certification.
  • OR any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.
  • AND possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Experience using hand tools, power tools, pruning tools, light trucks, and tractors.
  • Experience in horticultural maintenance, planting, and pruning techniques.
  • Experience operating power equipment used for horticultural maintenance.
  • Knowledge of tree transplanting equipment and planting techniques.
  • Knowledge of common tree diseases, treatments, and mitigation.
  • Knowledge of arboricultural practices and proper tree maintenance and management including the American National Standard Institute Z133.1 Safety Requirements for Arboricultural Operations and the A-300 Tree, Shrub, and other Woody Plant Management-Standard Practices.
  • Ability to identify local tree species during all seasons.
  • Experience as a participant with an established job site safety analysis; mitigating or making corrections to the job site and/or job plan as needed.
  • Ability to incorporate knots, hitches, and mechanical rope devices into technical climbing and rigging situations, including cranes.
  • Demonstrated experience in traffic control situations, ability to assess traffic control needs, and stage traffic control devices in a standardized manner.
  • Ability to acquire utility locations through the Utility Notification Center of Colorado (811).
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills.
  • Ability to maintain and access accurate records.
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with upset citizens.
  • Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, light trucks, and tractors.
  • Ability to follow both verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with others.
  • Ability to follow established safety policies and practices.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled tree work on city-owned trees to include, but not limited to, pruning, removal, stump-grinding, planting, and watering.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized working environment.
  • Apply pesticides and other chemical agents.
  • Climb trees and/or operate aerial lift equipment to perform aerial tree work (as assigned and qualified).
  • Operate equipment and maintain machinery required in tree maintenance including, but not limited to, mini-loader, brush chipper, chainsaws, tree spades, skid loaders, hydraulic pumps, and trailers.
  • Perform emergency storm response and snow removal in coordination with the Culture, Parks, and Recreation Department.
  • Plan and execute jobsite set-up including traffic control, hazard assessment, and crew coordination.
  • Perform or assist with tree risk observations; identify defects, pests, and disease symptoms; recommend treatment or corrective actions.
  • Assist with the training of crews and inspecting contract landscape installations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Organize and delegate assignments to team members.

  • Hold employees accountable for assigned task and goals.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback and training opportunities.
