The Parks & Recreation Department is hiring a seasonal Arborist to join their Team! Work as part of a team to beautify and maintain city parks and facilities. This is a skilled labor position involving knowledge and practical experience in the maintenance and identification of trees and shrubs common to the Steamboat Springs area. This is a 40 hour per week seasonal position for approximately 6 months, May – October. THE QUALIFIED INDIVIDUAL: Serves as an ambassador of the City of Steamboat Springs and upholds City values of Service, Teamwork, Integrity, Well-being, Respect and Compassion, while espousing safety at all times.

Requirements

  • Must possess a valid Colorado driver's license
  • Graduation from high school or completion of GED
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in urban forestry, landscape construction and/or maintenance, general construction practices and experience in the operation of a wide variety of light and heavy equipment and tools used in construction and maintenance work

Nice To Haves

  • Able to identify trees and shrubs
  • Certification through International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist program

Responsibilities

  • Very technical skills involved in pruning and removal of trees and shrubs
  • Tree and shrub identification
  • Tree maintenance activities such as pruning and planting
  • Tree and shrub pests and diseases and recommended control measures
  • The general practices applied in the care and safe operation of a wide variety of light and heavy construction and maintenance equipment (bobcats/tool cats, trucks, trailers, woodchipper, chainsaws, hand tools, etc.)
  • Deals effectively with the public and other City employees
  • Safely operate and train others in the safe operation of mechanical hand tools, and various light and heavy equipment
  • Follows oral and written instructions
  • Reads and understands construction documents
  • Develops and maintains maintenance schedules
  • Performs work without direct supervision
