About The Position

We are seeking a dynamic, vibrant, and versatile Aquatics & Family Life Director to lead and grow our aquatic programs—including swim lessons, water safety education, and recreational aquatics—while also developing and implementing family and youth programs and initiatives. This role is instrumental in creating a safe, inclusive, and energetic aquatic environment alongside enriching youth development experiences where children, teens, and families can thrive, build skills, and reach their full potential.

Requirements

• Demonstrated experience in aquatics, youth programming, and program leadership.
• Certification in lifeguarding, first aid, CPR, lifeguard instructor, CPR instructor, YSL instructor, and CPO (or willingness to obtain).
• Strong leadership and organizational skills with the ability to inspire and motivate a diverse team.
• Excellent communication skills and a knack for building positive relationships with children, parents, and staff.
• Proficiency in budget management, staff supervision, and program development.
• A deep passion for working with people of all ages, especially youth, and a commitment to delivering a safe, fun, and enriching experience for all.

Responsibilities

• Oversee all aquatic operations.
• Implement and manage a comprehensive aquatics program, including training and supervising aquatic staff.
• Maintain high standards for water safety and quality through conducting regular inspections, chemical maintenance, and emergency drills.
• Promote a fun and engaging aquatic environment while ensuring adherence to all safety protocols.
• Facilitate CPR, Lifeguard, and YSL (YMCA Swim Lesson) certification trainings
• Maintain active CPO certification (must complete certification within first 6 months of employment, if not currently certified)
• Oversee ChildWatch as well as youth and family programming.
• Design and implement a variety of engaging enrichment programs that cater to the interests and developmental needs of children.
• Coordinate with staff to create a balanced schedule that includes physical activities, creative projects, and team-building exercises.
• Continuously evaluate and adapt programs to enhance participant satisfaction and address evolving needs.
• Build a nurturing environment that supports personal growth and fosters confidence in every child.
• Create and maintain the budget for Aquatics and Family Life departments, ensuring financial sustainability and efficient resource use.
• Schedule all staff in Aquatics and Family Life departments
• Complete payroll on a biweekly basis
• Attend and actively participate in association-wide meetings to innovate and support similar programs across the YMCA of Greater Birmingham.
• Engage in leadership team meetings to collaborate, share insights, and drive the overall success of YMCA programs.
• Build and inspire a strong, capable, and enthusiastic team dedicated to the YMCA’s mission and cause.
• Support our Annual Campaign to fundraise for YMCA programs and initiatives, contributing to our community’s growth and well-being.
• Participate in and support community engagement events, representing the YMCA and fostering the development of community relationships.
